I meant that he offers **** **** in open play ... His game is tailored for a counter attacking team and Rafa's teams like to boss games, not concede possession during the Houllier days. That's why Cisse never flourished here.

Please, don't be silly and quote in isolation and miss the context of my post.

Goals are not guaranteed in this equation. Rafa prefers to have players who contribute instead of one dimensional ones.

I remember Owen used to be involved in build-up play and could hold the ball up well -he is far far better and aware than Cisse. He certainly would fit into the way we play.

I agree he is better for counter attacks but is certainly capable of playing other systems. Fact is he has scored goals wherever he has been and whenever he has played - so that is exactly the type of player we need.

Rafa is like most of us here mate and sees what some don't see. Owen is a player of 'limited' ability. He could be a great player for Newcastle but he won't do for us. You have to take into account that even when he was here, we were a limited team. We are aiming for the very top now, so Owen doesn't fit IMO.

I had my doubts when Owen was playing for us at the time, so people should not think I'm bias because he's left us. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been a regular had he still been playing for us anyway. I've analyzed Owen's performances for a long time and his glaring deficiencies can best be shown we he plays for England. He does **** all there and can't get to grips in games. Basically if he doesn't have the ball he's inexistent. He can't link play as efficiently as Bellamy.

If Bellers had the goalscoring nous of a Michael Owen, I think he would still be there next season ... IF he's been sold as expected next season.

Nothing new there then, Stevie and Carra are always going to want Owen back.
                  Inspired stuff from the journo
Unfortunately for Owen, he had his chances with Rafa, two of them in fact, and didn't take them. SO Mickey wants to come back and win the champions league.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                  * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Mickey still has to realize that he's an average quantity.

Well, he scores a hell of a lot goals for England when he plays so I really don't think the manager cares how much he is involved in the team. The fact that every England manager picks him shows how good he is.

He has played in a lot of systems and always scored goals. He played on the wing for Real and scored goals for example.

The only worry is his fitness, not if he will score goals or not.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Fredo, aren't you fed up of having strikers (Kuyt etc) who contribute a lot to the team, but don't score enough goals? Owen is the opposite of this, and it is often goals we are lacking. Put him up alongside someone who does the donkey work and hey presto.

Not saying I defo want us to sign him, but can't really see a problem with having a player who would guarantee goals!

Dirk Kuyt could have scored 20+ goals this season if he played with a creative force behind him. We need a player such as Wayne Rooney. A creator of goals ... Kuyt / Eto'o will do the rest.

That's why Rafa is opting for class players on both wings, because he feels Kuyt and Crouch can deliver.

Owen wouldn't even be first choice with our current squad ... With Rafa in charge.

Yes, but Rafa said at the time he signed for Newcastle that he could still return in the future.

And Fredo, I respect your opinion, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind he is a world class striker. The facts are there and speak for themselves.

If you go by what you say then Carra should be moved on because he does not offer much else other than solid no-nonense defending - which is all we need! So in the same way all we need from our striker is goals - surely we can agree on this.

How would you guarantee goals ? By having enough creative talents in the team creating chances galore. A high percentage of clear cut chances in a game and we'll be shipping in with 3 in average per game. That's what Man United have been doing for years. They even had Andy Cole as a striker who scored goals galore for them, and everyone knows how average Cole was.

Exactly? You have creative and hard working players elsewhere in the team, and then a top quality finisher (owen) to put the ball in the back of the net - along with contributions from the other striker and midfield.
