SG is one our greatest - period.
That's unfair. The Rush transfer was very political. He may have been willingly complicit, but I'm pretty sure he neither engineered it nor actively sought it.

As for Gerrard. I think he's a great player, but even notwithstanding the Chelsea sagas, I could never call him a genius. I'm no expert, but I don't feel he has the same game intelligence as a player of Dalglish's standard - the same ability to make average players look good by bringing them into the game at opportune moment. Although he has a great deal of talent, much of it is based on energy and sheer will power. He doesn't possess the same guile and trickery as Barnes, or the same natural clinicism as Rush.

I stand to be corrected, as I say I am certainly no expert. If I am right, then I reckon SG will start to burn out fairly early. I hope I am wrong of course.
    Really?

Id like to see Gerrard being more of a leader, as opposed to a bitcher on the field to be honest.
Gerrard is a fantastic player, and has great individual talent, but I don't think he is the natural leader that Carragher is. If Gerrard had Carra's leadership abilities, he would be the most influential player in the world, bar none.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

If he plays to his full potential in the middle of the park he can become one of our all time greats. Dalglish, Souness and Rush all played in unbelievable teams so the players around him also have to play their part. People still give him **** about the chelsea saga but he was very much a victim of circumstances ie his agent wanted a big pay day and chelsea were willing to help him that.

But he never will take over as fulltime captain, Stevie would not be happy and would probably leave cause if a manager took the captaincy off him then he would just feel he's been pushed out.....

Yeah he can be a super captain but also goes missing alot of times which is a pity,

Every single match you watch of Liverpool on TV you can ALWAYS hear Carra shouting at the back four and organising them etc.......he must go through a packed of Soothers after every match.....you never hear Stevie shouting much through your TV though.....

I am amazed by some of the responses. Gerrard is a god of a footballer and we would have won pretty much **** all in the last 5 years without him. He has dragged us from the dust and mentions of league titles are nothing short of disrespectful. He has performed in a mediocre team year on year playing above the teams standard and has always stood up to be counted.

We are stupidly lucky to have him and should be very grateful. Carra I am sure would make a great captain and he is a better character but Gerrard is proper captain material. Had he left for Man U or Chelsea they would have owned the league for a long time. In a nut shell we are very ****ing lucky to have such a great player, maybe some will only realise this when he is gone.

this whole thread is based on media speculation about footballers being genius'. the whole frigging mindless world (outside of liverpool) agreed beckham was a footballing genius cos he could curl the sodding ball. what a load of ****e.

Stevie has gone through a lot of **** recently with Chelsea and all the rumours about his personal life so why do we all feel it is neccessary to try and rubbish him away from an extremely pretentious 'label' that means nothing.

                              He is a match winner
He is an inspiration to the team
He has won every honour bar 1 (will have it this season)

                              Give him a break

p.s. i know everyone is entitled to their opinion but constantly berating him and saying he is not as good as quality players who played surrounded by other quality players isnt fair on the lad.

i always try and think to myself, what if he was bored and wanted to see what the fans were thinking. does everyone think that knocking him for not being king kenny just before the start of the season is right?
                              in january we were doomed.

in august we will rise from the ashes of ****e and march on again

Personally, I think Stevie is a world class footballer, and his personal ability is world class. Stiking from distance, passing, tackling.
But, I just don't rate his leadership skills as highly as others might.
I know, people will point to Istanbul, and The West Ham Cup final. Yes, he led by example, fair enough, and captains should.
But, I think the way he verbally communicates with the rest of the team during the 90 mins leaves alot to be desired.
I am not trying to take anything away from him, just saying how I see it. Gerrard is prob still my fav. player at Liverpool.
