There is also the point that I'm not sure he had a single attempt on goal the entire game, certainly none stand out, though he did play a key role in the opener and also setup a couple of other chances.
he had at least 2 in the 2nd half .1 a right footed shot went into side netting and 2nd a leftie went over the bar from torres' layoff.
p.s. i'm not a fan of the man.

I like Dirk but must admit to having reservations about him as a top class striker. Today though, and I watched the whole match, I thought he was excellent. Won loads in the air, had some decent shots, linked play very well and of course worked hard and was 110% committed. Keep it up Mr Kuyt because I really really want you to succeed here!

Anyone slagging of Dirk after that game clearly has no idea.

He gave 110% as usual and linked play fantastically with Torres......very exciting IMO. They looked very good together. He also had some chances on goal....sure he didnt convert any, but you cant say any of them were easy. He also got us that goal, with his pure determination to not let the ball go out of play....alot of players would of given up on that ball....not Dirk!

People have to find another whipping boy (i'd suggest Pennant), because Dirk is a quality player.

He chased that ball that other strikers would have left go for a corner and got us a goal. Also a lovely dummy before hand.He put a chance on a plate in the second half yesterday for Stevie from 6yards!!!He linked attack and midfield brilliantly and defended from the front.
If anyone should have got questioned on performance,it should have been Pennant. This is his year to step up and show us he has what it takes.
Oh the man is a midfield maestro
and his passes are sooo delightful

I really hope he starts banging in few goals. Really i do.We all talk about his workrate which is exceptional.I don't disslike him at all, quite the opposite, but i really feel that the chances he misses will cost us.

I mostly agree but I still think he played too deep yesterday - the positions he took up are fine when a player like Babel comes on and links the midfield to the attack and gives us another threat but with Pennant and Riise out wide I think we need our forwards pair to be closer together and to both occupy defenders.

Still he did a lot of good things in the game and hopefully we will improve as a unit over the season.

First half yesterday; Stevie lad slides an inch perfect through ball between the two central defenders to Kuyt, perfectly in stride as well, on his favoured side, edge of the box. But instead of taking the shot first time - it was sitting perfectly for him to do so - he cut back let the Villa defence get goalside and the attack went nowhere.

Lack of confidence, or lack of goalscoring instincts?

Then there was his first touch, which at times was yet again mediocre. And seeing as he's the apparent link striker (which is a ****in nonsense by the way) it really shouldn't be.

But then again he works hard, like the other 10 players out there don't?

and then there was the ball he could have given up on that gave us the first goal, there's plenty of different ways to look at his game. i think he's going to get better this season

Not having that. I take hustle and workrate like that as a given, from any player who wants to play for us.

I want to see more quality from him.

Hard work only gets you so far.

i'm not sure quality as such is part of his game, a bit like you wouldn't say it was part of sissokos, can still be a very good player doing what he does tho

Also unfair,Pennant had as good a game as Riise.

I was impressed with him yesterday and im not his biggest fan, he not only worked his ass off he added more to the game then he did last year.

but he needs to finish better
