Van Perise??? Where does he come into it? Bar the fact he doesn't even play for us, he's hardly even the most natural finisher in the world.

I think it's a very worrying sign if people are already criticising Kuyt after that performance. He made some wonderful runs off the ball and played brilliantly just off Torres.

As someone pointed out earlier, Kuyt is always well received by the fans at the stadium. I think most of his biggest critics (not all) probably don’t get to many matches, and this is what causes the great divide. They base their views on selected TV images, highlights or even what they read in the paper. The ridiculous argument that he doesn’t score enough goals for a forward really emphasises this point. Excluding the fact that he did have a decent goal return last year, he has so much more to his game. I was at the West Ham game when he made his debut, and when he came on I spent the rest of the game focused on him, rather than the match. He obviously isn’t the best-looking person in the world, so that isn’t what grabbed my attention. I was just amazed at his approach to the game and his determination. He caused West Ham so many problems, not only with the ball at his feet, but off the ball also. There was one point when West Ham had a throw-in in a pretty neutral area, Kuyt ran about 40 yards, past about 3 or 4 of his own players just to pressure the player about to receive the ball, and inevitably we won possession back seconds later. I think stuff like this is priceless.

Garcia is a great example to prove my point. Like Kuyt, opinions of him were severely divided. I’d imagine though that most of his biggest supporters didn’t get to see him live too often. Because of his goals they overlooked his other deficiencies, the things that so often caused the Anfield crowd to groan and shout during the game. Unfortunately though for Kuyt, it’s these same things that people tend to forget that make him such a useful addition to the squad.

Rafa traditionally likes to play one up front away from home, with a player behind to support. Kuyt is perfect for this role as yesterday proved. He pressurises the defence when not in possession, he chases back, he hits both wings and regardless of what people say, he is a genuine goal threat.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Sorry to have to quote this from you mate, not a dig at you at all.

I have said before, and I will say it again that I have the utmost respect for Kuyt at Liverpool. I didn't whilst he was at Feyenoord. He works his socks off for the team, will take his goals when they come, possibly has the best instincts of any of our strikers (I've put examples in previous posts, not going to repeat myself), and if not for him, we would not have 'scored' that OG against Villa. The guy was our top league goalscorer last season, and second top assister. What more does he have to do?

well i saw 9 minutes tops on motd so i'm not qualified to comment on how well he played.

i just noticed that some of the things he was getting slagged for looked like good play to me (the bits they showed) so it looked unfair criticism.

maybe if i'd seen the whole game i'd have been wanting to kick him up the hole too, but certainly some of the criticisms during the match were odd to say the least. he was even criticised for his role in the goal....

I saw the whole game and thought he was excellent, the criticism he received in the game I personally felt was unwarranted and just vitriolic out of what could be a dislike for Kuyt. Its fair enough to have a go at some if they play poor, but Kuyt was excellent at the weekend.

good to hear it. i wouldn't normally start a thread like this based on only watching match of the day, but like i said, they did show some of the things he'd supposedly done wrong and they didn't look wrong to me.

That's right mate you know me so well don't ya - :whatever: I don't rate Sissoko or Arbeloa or Pennant or Benayoun but i won't be slagging off them(well not as much) as Kuyt. Your free to your opinion so less of the agenda **** - fool!! OH and just look at those players above, you are among the many on here and on other pool sites who think they are good enough to win the league-

You were slagging him off while he was one of the best players out on the pitch (though not as badly as justcruzin was) that to me makes you look like a fool.

I don't think it is always wind up merchants, there's just some people on these forums who don't know how to play football or simply just don't watch it.

Woah. I nearly missed this little beauty. Fair enough about Benayoun and perhaps Pennant, but what is it you don't rate about Sissoko and Arbeloa? Maybe it was Sissoko's world class performances for the better part of 18months while he's been here, maybe it was Arbeloa's sensational debut in the Nou Camp and since then he hasn't put a foot wrong. I'd rather him at left back than Riise at the moment. This is what I mean about people not watching. It's either that or you expect perfection 100% of the time. I'm absolutely baffled

In fairness Sissoko's performances were poor after his injury last season and Arbeloa had a couple of very dodgy games for us at the back-end of last season (can't remember who against) but I agree with the general theme of your post.

One thing though - you agree with him for not rating Benayoun....but Yossi hasn't kicked a single ball for the club? What's all that about?
