Because i dont believe we should give opponents anything to get their teeth into in terms of motivation, there are many many other things he could have said in that interview.
Get the game won first IMO.

          1. They were hardly the most insulting or degrading comments he made.

          2. f Chelsea need something like this for motivation on day three of their campaign, then they’ve got serious problems.

          3. Pre-match, his comments are an honest assessment of how he sees things. Post-match it would be taken as an almost arrogant dismissal of Chelsea’s chances based purely on one match, i.e. just because they couldn’t beat Liverpool, Chelsea must be slipping.

I’m really struggling to see the problem here. The team are confident of beating Chelsea at home and aren’t going to lie about it. Chelsea know we are confident, so why would anything anyone says make a difference?
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Not at all mate! It's a continuing trend with Liverpool players these days that especially before big games when we start giving it the large one so to speak we get beat and beat well. Morientes, Alonso, Garcia in the past have all come out and said stupid things to try and up the anti and it's backfired.

It also makes you look like a dickhead when it does backfire.

The only thing the squad should be concentrating on at the moment is preparing for the game. If Benitez feels mind games are needed let him deal with that.

                      I must agree.

@ Polo: Regarding the superstition, maybe I read between the lines too much, but the whole 'It's going to backfire on us!' sort of talk, in my opinion, could be rendered superstitious. They are only words Mascher used, there was hardly anything sinister about them, he talked his talk. Fair comments in my opinion and it will have little, if any, bearing on the outcome of the match on Sunday.

People on here completely over analyse players comments to the media. These were pretty innocuous comments of the type you see from players of all big sides before games.

I'd prefer us to do our talking on the pitch, Rafa made comments 2 seasons back, after the CL group game and they beat us 4-1 at Anfield in the league the following Sunday.
Don't get me wrong I think we should be confident but keep it to ousrselves not because of fear but let us keep it respectful and let us do it on the pitch.
We don't need to go down to their level spouting any kind of ****e before a big game like this.
                          Keep it on the ptich.

Then we'll just have to agree to disagree. I further think it wasn't 'down to their level' and 'spouting any kind of ****e'. It was quite a normal assessment of the current situation. This however is just my subjective opinion and cannot be stated as fact. Agree to disagree And I don't think Mascher was being disrespectful, that might have warranted a claim such as 'They're an aweful team to watch, their football is very static and one-way, completely unlike us. That is why I believe they don't even need to turn up.' That, in my opinion would be disrespectful.

Never-to-mind, after we beat them on Sunday this comment will have been all but forgotten.

Edit: When they drubbed us 4-1 we weren't half the team we are now and they were on top form with hardly any injuries. Then was then, this is now and all that

Doesn't matter really, Sunday the talking will be done on the pitch as it would be even without Mascher's comments. I doubt his comments will have 'serious repercussions' as some seem to make it out.
