I think it's all too easy to judge others based on our own principles without allowing that someone else's principles could be equally as valid even if they differ from our own.

As an employer you cannot treat everybody the same. I'd be ****ed if my boss treated me exactly the same as everyone else in my team. My circumstances mean I have different needs than them and my boss recognises that. Same as others have their needs. Yes, you have to treat people fairly and as equals but you still have to treat people as individuals too because what may work for one person might not work for another. Any employer worth their salt would recognise that. I really don't see what peoples problems with this are. It is part of his religion and religion is a huge part of some peoples lives. It was one day of the year for gods sake. I'm sure we can all cope. If Rafa can then so can we.

They do but everyone may at some stage need time off for a funeral so therefore it's fair because everyone gets the same treatment.

Well, not everyone has to go to the same number of funerals, people have different size families, may or may not be close to extended family, the younger you are the less funerals you're likely to be attending etc. Tbh it's not really about the number of days you take off anyway, as long as it's within reason. It's about the idea that if something is genuinely important enough to the individual they should be allowed a day off.

Equality doesn't have to be measured in specific terms - rather than seeing it in terms of number of days off, or one person getting special treatment for a specific day, better to see it in terms of an employer being willing to make this allowance for any individual given a set of circumstances where working would interfere with something incredibly important to them personally.

Also, the thing about Christmas. The reason there are no games on Christmas day is because of the religious holiday, it's not a coincidence that by some quirk of the calendar no games fall on Dec 25th. It would be stupid for Christmas not to be a national holiday with it being so widely celebrated in this country, everyone would be wanting the day off work for it, so the allowance is built in if you like. Not allowing a Jewish person the day off work on Yom Kippur makes perfect sense given they are essentially just receiving the same allowance that is automatically afforded to people for Christmas.

That's fair enough but surely if his religious beliefs were such a big problem Rafa wouldn't of bought him surely. I'm mean if you went for a job interview and told your possible employers that you would need time off for a religious holiday they then have to make a judgement before they employ you if this is going to be a problem.
