The Jewish Day of Atonement 1 Rafa 0

Difficult subject this. We all say that we'd do anything to play for Liverpool but this is Yossi's religion, and I won't be surprised or disappointed if he's not involved today if it's something he has to do. Apparently the new Chelsea bloke is not taking training today either.

    Benayoun doubt for Brum trip

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez has had his team selection for today’s visit of Birmingham to Anfield thrown into confusion – by the Jewish Day of Atonement.

Reds midfielder Yossi Benayoun began a 25-hour fast at sunset last night to observe the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday.

The period of fasting will continue until sundown tonight, and has left Benitez pondering whether to include the Israeli international.

Yom Kippur is considered to be one of the holiest and most solemn days of the year by Jews.

It is commemorated in Rabbinic Judaism with a 25-hour fast and intensive prayer.

Benitez was placed in a similar quandary when Momo Sissoko observed a similar fast during the Ramadan festival earlier this year.

On that occasion, however, Sissoko did play.

Benayoun’s religious beliefs may offer a reprieve to Jermaine Pennant, sent off in midweek at Porto.

Benitez admitted that he has spoken to the winger privately since his transgression in Portugal.

“I still have confidence in him,” said Benitez. “He is a good player, he is training well and you cannot criticise him for anything on the pitch.

    “He just has to learn.

“You cannot kill a player for making one mistake.

“I have tried to take the positives with him.

“I have spoken to him and I have spoken to the rest of the team.

“Trying to find the positives from the incident . . . I think he was working really hard.

“But I think also think that it will be good for him and good for his team-mates to analyse the situation and try and keep control of things.

“He was trying to show that he is working hard enough for the team, but you must learn from your mistakes and it is something he will learn.”

Pennant could line up against his old club Birmingham today and Benitez added: “He is in the squad and against his former club I think he will try hard again to show he is good enough - especially after this week.”

I think this is bollox by the way, Football has always been played on Good Friday and every player was expected to play regardless and I'm sure if not for family reasons Christmas day would see games played, also games are played on a Sunday etc etc. . . .
Football comes above religion for me.

But Jews are the chosen people. They take it a bit more seriously, as Maureen did.

Plus Ben Onion is probably scared of his mum, just like KK07.

Not sure how you can think it's bollocks really, it's obviously an important festival, I must admit however i know nothing about the jewish religion. The comparison to good friday is pointless because we don't fast, and thats the crux of the matter with benayoun

We might need him to cover at centre half.

Don't get me wrong mate I am not anti semite or any other religion.
If you play professional football then you should be available to play regardless of what ever religious festival is happening and no exceptions should be made.
Quite a lot of people fast on Good Friday and some spend all day in Church and I wouldn't see that as acceptable for a pro footballer either.
No problem respecting anyone's beliefs but being allowed special treatment for it is not on.

Yossi should be forced to play.

I have him as a scorer in the prediction game.

It's a pity Pacman isn't Jewish or Muslim. He could do with fasting apparently.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I'm with looprevil in that we should respect his religious beliefs - it's not as if we didn't know about them before we signed him. In contrast I do think that he should be available for selection in the same way Momo has been during his fast period - we however have to consider the effects of the fast on his performance.

I'm not sure why people feel being a professional footballer should over ride peoples belief systems. Clubs buy players knowing full well that they will have a life outside football and the impact this may have, religious festivals are predictable and so have to be planned for by the club. Other workplaces manage to work round/adapt to religious constrictions football has to be the same.
