A couple of months ago I went to a stage finish in the Tour de France and took my old 35mm camera. My daughter asked me if I'd intended to take so many pictures of the policewoman standing across the course from me. I told her I must have been messing about with the lens.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I'm experiencing very contradictory emotions on this thread.

          Neither. Or both.

          No, neither. Definitely.

I'm not attacking Bob personally - as I think I made clear - but I reiterate that he has overlooked what I think is by far the most likely reason for the signing of Itandje, i.e. because he's better than Martin. Instead he stated that Rafa signed him because he's a foreigner. It's a ludicrous idea and I don't see where it comes from in footballing terms.

If Rafa thinks he's better than any other option then fine but if that's case why is Martin at the club? Why have an academy if these kids aren't going to get a chance?

I suspect Rafa is far more interested in Liverpool winning the League than in promoting what's best for English football and to be honest so am I.
I'd hate to get to a situation where we have no English players in the team or we've no youngsters coming through like Gerrard, Carra, Fowler and Owen. Gerrard and Carra are the heart and soul of our team. I don't think it's xenophobic to want to see local lads or young English players play for the club.

Neither do I. That's not what he said but if that's what he meant then fine. It's hardly the same as saying that Rafa 'blatantly' signed him because he was a foreigner.

As for why Martin is there, I don't know. I could hazard a guess but that doesn't get us anywhere really.

Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I read it.

And these young lads aren't going to get that chance if we bring in journey men foreigners who aren't going to improve out 1st team squad.

For the last time, we need to consider the possibility that maybe Rafa thinks he does improve the first team squad!

I'm not mad. At least, I'm not angry in the slightest. I don't think I'm mad either but it's hard to be objective about that.

I've got work to do. Pip pip!

Itandje wasn't bad last night. He just needs to get used to the physical nature of the game and be ready to come for crosses much more often than he did and be braver for that. Apart from his cock up, I think he did very well and made two great saves.

Are you sure you're not just being a tad xenophobic?
no its just black keepers on the whole are **** just like they are at swimming and white guys tend not to make good sprinters. there's always someone who bucks the trend but trust me it won't be our Craig Charles.

I think our clubs do have a responsibility to try and help british players. Carragher wouldn't get through the system today, he's said as much himself, but how much poorer would we be without him? British players have a spirit about them that can more than make up for any technical deficiencies they may have compared to a ball juggling brazalian. Its a much maligned skill that is often overlooked these days.
