Xabi Alonso and our lack of goals

i agree he wouldn't have any impact on the goal scoring front - however it's fair to assume that neither spurs nor marseille would have dominated our midfield had he been on the pitch. we couldn't string two passes together at times and seemed to rush things whenever we were on the ball, hence giving it away needlessly. xabi would have calmed our play down to positive effect. even though i've been critical of his form of late, especially his long range passing, it is more than obvious that there is so much more to his game than the odd through ball. tactically he's second to none in our squad.

So you saying we would have beaten Pompey with him on the field?
I think we're missing Agger more than Alonso for reason mentiond above. We are missing Alonso as an option as well, obviously.
Alonso of the Prozac this season would have been great. Alonso as of last season would have made no difference.
We will see against the Bitters, won't we?
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.

Seems to me that Liverpool fans who can't understand Xabi's worth to the team obviously know nothing about football.
It's a sad day when a Manc can appreciate the value of Xabi and our own supporters cannot.

Alonso runs the game from the back , dictates tempo etc.Originally posted by CAD View PostI can see people wanking on about him because the bad results happens to coincide with Alonso missing.
I can see people writing that we would have carved Pompey a new hole if he had been ready. He actually did play. So thats wank and nothing else.
I think losing Agger has hurt us more as we have lesser cover for his position.
Of course I can see the importance of Alonso but you people are overemphasizing it and acting like he's the Messias. He's not. There is little he could have done to make us look better forward. What did he do for us against Pompey? He played the HM and he did very little for us going forward. He would have played HM in the other matches as well with 90% certainty = Little impact up field. Look at his stats for goals and assists as a HM and you will see the picture.
And take your
and shove it up your ass.
Why can you see that?

he's also the one Rafa speaks to during the match.
As has been said by a few here I think our best CM pairing is Alonso and Masser - This give Alonso the chance to take the ball off the back 4 but then also push forward during attacks. Stevie has to be the free role player or wide right. Its times like these we learn to live again FF

Indeed - and why is it that Rafa's instructions go direct to Xabi? He and Carra have the sharpest footballing minds in the team.Originally posted by redlancer View Posthe's also the one Rafa speaks to during the match.

Also agree with Gerrard being given the free role or wide right (which has been a de facto free role whenever he has played there). Gerrard doesn't have the discipline I think to play in rigid formations.White liquid in a bottle = Milk

Well I don't think anyone on here has over-exaggerated his importance to the side, but that is my opinion of course.Originally posted by kewellnthegang View Posthe is a good player yeah but as has been said one or two wettin themselves cos he is out and saying he is better than he is

And I didn't mean to imply you moan at the match either. I just feel Xabi's importance is underestimated. Even when playing poorly he can be influential, and we do miss him when he's out. We have been so disjointed the last few games, and that's something we rarely are when Xabi's in the team, and I think it's no coincidence.
In any case, thank you for making a considered response for a change instead of just laughing at someone's post.
