Souness doesn't deserve any votes either. There are only 5 worthy applicants IN MY OPINION. The ones who have won one of the big 2 i.e. Kenny, Rafa, Shanks, Paisley, FaganOriginally posted by Mattshark View PostWhat compared to Souness as a manager? Great player, but Ged was a far better manager than he was yet Souey has more votes.
Obviously, others have different views but I'm sure Houllier will accept that he won't be many people's favourite compared to 5 legends.Originally posted by Gordon Brown

I just think it is strange that more people have voted Souness than Fagan and that people think Souness was a better manager than Houllier.

That would be people like me who grew up with him as a player and still worship him for the god that he was. It colors (thats how you need to spell it nowOriginally posted by Mattshark View Post

BTW I voted to Shankly he built the foundations upon which Paisley et al prospered. They rode his coat tails so to speak.
A lot of younger fans miss the whole human dimension, they just compare trophy hauls, Shankly loved the fans they loved him back, he inspired them, he was charasmatic, you KNEW we would win with Shankly.
The man was a Messiah.
Any other oldies want to comment on Shankly? The Crushing Machine MKII

I remember Souness as a player, but as a manager he was far less sucessfull than Houllier and actually bought worse players.Originally posted by SpeedyG View PostThat would be people like me who grew up with him as a player and still worship him for the god that he was. I was seriously tongue in cheek about Phil Taylor, because I don't know how anyone can compare the efforts of Bill, or Bob or Joe, or Kenny against each other. They all took the team to different levels from where it had been before, in different time periods.Originally posted by looprevil View PostWho is the 'other' who got 1 vote? LOL
To me, it's like trying to compare Billy Liddell with Ian Rush. The comparisons just don't work IMHO.
But on second thoughts, I liked the mention of John Houlding (who) created an alehouse team (as per http://tinyurl.com/2sos6h No 49)Last edited by Crazy-Horse; 03-11-07, 10:40 AM.

On a very personal level, it'd have to be Kenny for me too. Paisley was the first manager I remember, just. I remember Fagan taking over clearly, but throughout my childhood from the ages of approximately 9-14 Kenny was the man. That team is a special one to me - as it was for most of us, but they were THE team of my early LFC years.Originally posted by KingKenny View PostDalglish
I voted for Shanks though. It's all about Shanks. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I agree with Shaggy in that the club is all about Shanks, he gave birth to the club in the modern era. Without him we would have won titles sure, the odd league here or there, but there's no way we'd be the club we are now.
Having said that, if we're picking our favourites mine is definitely Kenny. He's the first Liverpool manager I can remember, he was my boyhood hero and I would mimick him when at school, like wearing a thick winter coat in May etc and look miserable. And all I can say about that 88 team is
Anyone who was privileged enough to watch that team will know what real football is all about. Arsenal of today as great as they play were not a patch on that team and people who say Arsenal are the closest we;ve seen to Brazil in the English club game obviously have selective amnesia or 1988 completely passed them by. That 88 side is IMO the best club side in the history of English football and for that reason alone Kenny deserves my vote.
We're so privileged to support a club like this, where our best ever player was also one of our best three managers and got us playing the best football any team in this country will ever play

for me there are a few things you need to think about
what was the state of the club that they became manager of?
what was there record?
and what state did they leave the club in?
so for me Shanks Souness Houllier and Rafa inherited a club that wasnt in shape to dominate
Well Shanks won a fair bit! Bob won well just about everything. Fagan did well and so did Kenny. Houllier and Rafa have won an ok amount but not as much as we would like.
What state have they left the club in well to my mind only Shanks, Bob and Joe left the club in a fantastic state for their successors. I personally think that while the king brought up arguably the best liverpool team ever (even if you dont agree that it was the best you know it was up there) and an entertaining style he did not leave the club in great shape. Too many ageing players for my liking.
So that leaves Bill, Bob and Joe. I would go for Bob for what he won. and the fact he left the club in great shape. but those three should be the top three for me.
