The Academy derby ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Finch Farm.
Everton had been leading 3-1 but a scrambled Liverpool goal, a red card and a last minute equaliser meant the Blues had to settle for a point.

A fiery encounter saw Liverpool take the lead in the 7th minute. Everton failed to clear a corner properly and Gary Mackay-Steven was able to lash the ball past Lars Stubhaug in the Everton goal.

Chances were few and far between in what was a scrappy game, but Everton were level at 14 minutes. Liverpool goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis slipped when attempting to clear the ball, leaving Kieran Agard the simple task of slotting the ball into an empty night.

The remainder of the first half saw Liverpool have the best of the chances. Alex Kacaniklic drilled a low cross from the left that had to be smothered by Stubhaug with Reds' striker Marvin Pourie lurking, while visiting captain Steve Irwin was fortunate to escape a booking for a snappy challenge on Everton's Daniel Redmond.

The second period began with both teams having chances to take the lead. Jose Baxter went close for Everton in the 51st minute, while Pourie shot wide for Liverpool from close range barely a minute later.

Everton though were gifted the lead in the 53rd minute when Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala spectacularly lobbed his own goalkeeper from the edge of the box after failing to deal with a long ball.

Liverpool had chances to regain parity, but another goalkeeping error allowed Everton to extend their lead. Bouzanis' kick found the head of Agard, who played in Lewis Codling. Codling twisted and turned on the edge of the box before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Hughie McAuley's side had a great chance to get back into the game when a penalty was awarded for James McCarten's foul on Nathan Eccleston. Pourie stepped up to take the kick but Stubhuag kept it.

From the resulting corner however, a scramble ensued that saw Ecclestone eventually prod the ball home. Tempers flared thereafter when McCarten, who was booked in the penalty incident, was given a straight red card for his part in a goalmouth scuffle.

Everton's 10-men were resolute in the face of heavy pressure from Liverpool's 11, but in the last minute Liverpool substitute Michael Collins equalised after good work from Shane O'Connor to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

Sounded like a helluva game. Looks like we gave them their goals though! It's from the Everton website, which seemed to give a far better report earlier on.

Sounds like we had by far the better of it and would have won if we hadn't been so generous.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

It will be great to beat these after all the moaning about how great Arsenal are at bringing in kids. Will show that Rafa isn't far away from Wenger.

New kid in for a trial:

Spanish starlet Dani Pacheco scored his first goal for the reserves as Gary Ablett's side beat Bury 3-1 in a friendly at the Academy on Wednesday afternoon.
A strike from Ryan Flynn and an own goal completed the scoring for a Liverpool side that could easily have registered double figures.

The match was organised to give the players some much needed match practice ahead of next Tuesday's league meeting with Wigan Athletic, at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington which you can watch live online on LFC TV.

Jack Hobbs played the full 90 minutes while Jay Spearing had another impressive game in midfield.

"It was our first game of 2008 and in all honesty we should have scored 10," said Ablett. "Our finishing was very poor. I know we haven't played a game for a month but the finishing needs to be improved.

"I was pleased to see Dani score his first goal but he could have had four or five himself."

Since the turn of the year Ablett's team have dropped down to second place in the Barclays Reserve League North. Sunderland now occupy top spot but a victory or a draw against Wigan would see the Reds leapfrog the Black Cats back into first place.

"We worked so hard in the first part of the season to get to the top of the table and now we need to show we are good enough to lead the way again," he added.

"The players have worked hard in training and we want them to keep improving and maintain that winning attitude."

Liverpool team v Bury: Dean Bouzanis (Peter Gulacsi 45), Stephen Darby, Emiliano Insua, Daniel Ayala (Ronald Huth 45), Jack Hobbs, Damien Plessis (Mikel San Jose 45), Ryan Flynn, Jay Spearing, Jordy Brouwer (Krisztian Nemeth 45), Dani Pacheco, Ray Putterill.

The oldest player in this team is what 20? and the youngest 16. Its very exciting. I hope a few of them get a run towards the end of the season especially Nemeth.

Liverpool Under-18s endured a frustrating afternoon as a late goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat against rivals Manchester United at the Academy.
Despite dominating for long periods the Reds could not find the breakthrough and were left cursing their luck 11 minutes from the end when United substitute Antonio Bryan fired home the winner from the edge of the box.

The result means Hughie McAuley's side are still searching for their first league success of 2008 following draws with both Bolton and Everton.

                                YOUNG REDS GUN DOWN ARSENAL
Paul Hassall at Anfield 29 January 2008

Liverpool's dreams of retaining the FA Youth Cup are very much alive after they produced a mature performance to secure a hard-fought victory over Arsenal at Anfield.
Captain Steven Irwin was the hero, as his deflected cross-shot midway through the first-half clinched a 1-0 win and booked Hughie McAuley's side's place in round five of the competition.

The Gunners came into the match boasting a trio of players who have already appeared in Arsene Wenger's first-team, but despite the obvious quality of Gavin Hoyte, Mark Randall and Kieran Gibbs, it was the Reds who created the better of the chances in an intriguing opening period.

Astrit Ajdarevic was first to show with a long range shot that flashed just wide of Wojciech Szcezesny's far post before Martin Kelly failed to divert his header goalwards after Sean Highdale's corner had found him unmarked in the six yard box.

For all their good approach play the visitors could not find a way through Liverpool's stubborn rearguard and their best chances of the half fell to Gilles Sunu and Gavin Hoyte, who both saw their efforts well saved by Aussie keeper Dean Bouzanis.

Indeed, as the period wore on the hosts grew in confidence and they were unlucky not to take lead when David Amoo's header from a Highdale cross was brilliantly saved by Szcezesny on 24 minutes.

But any sigh of relief the Arsenal players may have breathed was premature as the Reds kept the attack going before taking the lead in the most bizarre of circumstances.

Steven Irwin picked up the ball on the right side of the Gunners area and powered to the byline before delivering a low effort across goal that deflected off an Arsenal defender's arm and into the net.

It was a fortuitous strike but one that gave them the confidence to go on and dominate the remainder of the first period as they countered Arsenal's silky passing moves with some purposeful play in the wide areas.

And on 41 minutes they could have doubled their interval lead as the Arsenal defence almost suffered a fatal case of déjà vu.

David Amoo broke well down the right and when his low cross was missed by Szcezesny, it hit Paul Rodgers and would have resulted in yet another crazy own goal but Hoyte was on hand to clear from underneath his own crossbar.

It was a frustrating moment for the Reds as a second goal would have made the second period a much more comfortable proposition.

But instead, the Gunners were still in the contest and after the restart they dominated proceedings with Mark Randall seeing an effort from distance fly just over the bar while Kelly and then Dean Bouzanis reacted well to keep out Kieran Gibbs' volley.

While Steve Bould's side dominated possession, it was Liverpool who made the more clear-cut opportunities with Kelly again finding space to head just wide from another Highdale corner before Amoo was brilliantly denied by Szcezesny on 71 minutes after he was sent clean through on goal.

With time running out the away side began to look desperate and on 79 minutes Liverpool's hopes were boosted when James Dunne was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after he brought down the dangerous Amoo for the umpteenth time.

Despite being a man down Arsenal continued to press and Liverpool were grateful to Martin Kelly for a heroic late block to deny Sanchez Watts' goalbound effort.

Not even a late appearance from Arsenal substitute Tom Cruise could inspire a last-gasp equaliser and the holders held on to secure their passage into round five.

The Liverpool team in full: Bouzanis, Irwin, MacKay-Steven, Kelly, Kennedy, Ajdarevic, Kacaniklic, Amoo, Highdale, Eccleston, Pourie (Collins 77). Unused Subs: Hansen, O'Connor, Scott, Awang.

Arsenal: Szczesny, Ogogo, Steer (Cruise , Dunne, Hoyte, Rodgers, Watts, Randall, Sunu (Thomas 71), Barazite, Gibbs. Unused subs: Shea, Nordtveit, Bartley.
