I'm with DJS on this one, we have only 2 consistent match winners in SG & now Torres. Utd clearly have at least 3 in Tevez, Rooney & Ronaldo but what they also have are players like Saha, Giggs & Scholes who contribute their fair share. Saha when fit contributes more than our other strikers and Giggs is still better than any of our wingers.

Chelsea are very much like us, if you stop Drogba & Lampard then you stop much of their threat. For us if SG & Torres don't score then more often than not we struggle. Utd simply have more goal scoring options than we do.

It's just that you seemed to get wound up by some of the other people on this thread.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure it's hard to sign them. It's hard to win the title too. Should we just shrug our shoulders and not try then?

We haven't got enough matchwinners in the team.

We need another couple players like Torres.

                It's nothing new really.

                  Consistant match winners.

                  Torres
                  Stevie

I think Babel will turn into one.he has got 2 lethal feet and is a massive danger anywhere around the box. Benayoun possibly. Kewell could be if he ever got a run of games under his belt.

Lil Luis was most definitely one.

I'd also say that Carra is a consistant match winner in another sense.

Don't know about SWP but Joe Cole is easily twice the player Quaresma is regardless of what people think of Joe.

So, we're talking your Stevie Gerrards and Fernando Torres'...

Not people who have ONCE or TWICE produced a winning goal.

To give you an example, last season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 8 winning goals, which equates to 16 points. THAT is the kind of thing i'm on about. Gerrard has been doing it for us for years, Torres is now starting to as well.
Do you not consider Pepe a 'consistent world class match winner' then?
"the correct decision would have been a penalty for us a red card for Gattuso and a yellow for Stevie"

I would say the following Premiership players are match-winners (in an attacking sense, at least).

                            Man Utd
                            Rooney
                            Ronaldo
                            Tevez

                            Arsenal
                            Fabregas
                            Van Persie

                            Man City
                            Elano

                            Chelsea
                            Drogba
                            Lampard

                            Liverpool
                            Gerrard
                            Torres

                            Portsmouth

                            Blackburn

                            Aston Villa

                            Everton
                            Cahill

                            West Ham

                            Newcastle
                            Owen

                            Reading

                            Fulham

                            Tottenham
                            Berbatov

                            Birmingham

                            Sunderland

                            Middlesbrough

                            Bolton
                            Anelka

                            Wigan Athletic

                            Derby County
They are definately few-and-far between but I wouldn't say they are all necessarily world-class superstars either.

If we could get Mark Clattenburg to ref for us every week would that count as an extra match-winner.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

I'm with you and DJS on this one. We have two proper match winners, Torres and Gerrard. Anyone who says different is quite frankly deluding themselves. To be honest having two consistent match winners isn't too shabby. Another 'match winner' like what United have would be a bonus but I think what's even more important is that we buy more players who give us goal scoring options. I think Benayoun's signing was a step in the right direction and Babel's signing was definitely one for the future and I can actually see him becoming a 'match winner' if he does indeed fulfill his potential.

I think we are desperately short of good attacking players and that has to be addressed asap. We need another proper top class striker/forward and for the love of god, we need a **** hot left sided winger.
