Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has spoken out against his growing army of critics, in an astonishing outburst from the normally mild-mannered Dutchman.
Kuyt, who cost £10m from Feyenoord, revealed he spends much of his free time reading internet forums and has been surprised by the level of criticism levelled at him.
He told Dutch magazine Van der Graaf Foot: “After training I like to go home, put up my feet and read the various Liverpool FC forums on my laptop. Lately it seems a lot of the fans have turned against me.”
“It is not upsetting because I know for certain that most of them are fairly clueless about the game. For sure there are people who defend me, and to those people I am grateful. It is apparent that those people know their football but unfortunately it is a small minority.”
“It is a shame it has to be this way but this is the way of the world now.”
Kuyt, who has scored only two Premiership goals this season, and none from open play, missed a hatful of chances at Blackburn recently and feels it was this performance that was the catalyst for the shift in fans’ opinion.
“All it takes is one not-so-good game, and everything changes,” opined the ex-Feyenoord hitman. “I felt I did okay at Ewood Park, but I could have done better with a couple of chances and this is what causes the negative reactions. If those people who are on my back pay attention to the whole match, and not just when I am shooting in the box, then they might learn a little bit about the game.”
Kuyt sat out Liverpool’s last two games, which he feels will be beneficial and is quick to point out he wasn’t dropped or punished for his below-par display against Mark Hughes’ side.
“I know I won’t play all of the games and this week I’ve had a rest, which I probably earned. I expect to be back in the team soon and I will carry on as normal. I have been playing well this season and I hope it continues.”

Must've had a bad day at the office to write such a thing!
"If you list the players at Liverpool who have shown their best form this season, I would be at the top."
So basically, that means that he is the only one who has shown his best form this season.
He's rather shot himself in the foot there as all the others have room for improvement whereas Kuyt has peaked
