Rafa Benitez: Time for young stars to step it up

Rafa Benitez: Time for young stars to step it up
Nov 16 2007 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today challenged Liverpool’s young stars to start fulfilling their potential.

The Liverpool boss is delighted with the way Ryan Babel, Lucas Leiva and Sebastian Leto have settled into life at Anfield but he believes there is still much more to come from them.

Now Benitez is looking to them to show the kind of form which would make it almost impossible for him to ignore their claims for a regular place in the first team.

He said: “Our squad is really good and hopefully the strength of the squad will become more clear as the season goes on.

“Some young players, especially the likes of Sebastian Leto, Lucas Leiva and Ryan Babel, will grow and progress during the season and I am sure they will play better.

“I am not disappointed with them but I think they do have the potential to play better.”

With Liverpool in fifth place in the Premiership and six points behind league leaders Arsenal, Benitez is relatively pleased with the start to the season his team has made.

But he believes it could have been so much better had the Reds not wasted opportunities to win more matches at home.

He said: “I feel that we are in a much better position than we were at this time last season.

“We have more points but if you think about the games and analyse the matches against Birmingham City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, they were three games that we could have won, so maybe we could be top of the table.

“You cannot be 100% happy because I know that we could have won these games, so there is plenty of room for improvement.”

Meanwhile, Fernando Torres has spoken of his surprise at the impact he has made on the Liverpool fans since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in the summer and told of the reasons why he was desperate to quit Spain and join the Reds.

He said: “It is surprising to see so many English fans wearing my shirt.

“I needed to lift the stress off me that I had in Madrid. Every single thing that happened was my fault or when things went well, it was only because of me. It was a problem.”

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

still not sure of leto. he looks totally knackered after about 50 minutes every time he plays. still, i reckon the 3 of them will be at the club for years and will be big successes
    in january we were doomed.

in august we will rise from the ashes of ****e and march on again

So they should too. They cost an absolute fortune between them.

Something £20m for the trio, wasnt it?

When you look at it that way, it's a bit gutting.

We'll still get that back if they do (eventually) fail though.

              why?

Leto I'm not too sure about (but it's far too early to tell), but I can see both LL and Babel developing into world class players.

              I don't think that's gutting at all.

If even one of the 3 make it, they will be worth more than £20m.

How anyone can form a definite opinion on 3 young players a few months into their first season in a new league is beyond me.

Like I said in an earlier thread, look at the impact Ronaldo made 12 games into his first season at Manure, and look at him now.

I usually avoid making early judgments of players, but I don't see Leto making the step up, ever. He just doesn't have enough in him. In Lucas and Babel, you see the huge potential waiting to explode, their 'weaknesses' are in areas that can be improved at their age and have more to do with the tactical and mental aspects of the game. Leto's problem is that he just isn't quick enough or skillful enough to be a top winger.

he's not a winger but a left sided midfield player ..

People are saying about how good some other players are for the reserves and hope they could make the step up. Leto and Lucas are by far the best out of the reserves they have only been here 4-5 months, I feel Lucas is the better player but they should both be given a run in the team instead of the bit part players they are being used as.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

That's a bit premature IMO. There's still time for them to come good. LL and RB is showing some early potential too.

The terminology in this case is unimportant. He's not going to be good enough to get into our team anyway.

I was unsure about Leto too, but watching a few of the reserve highlights really shows he has the skill to get past players, but is maybe lacking the confidence to play in the 1st team
