Riise made a mistake and it happens. Yes it's a sucker punch and yes, we're all fecked off but for Christ's sake, he didnt MEAN it, he wasnt TRYING to score an own goal.

I dont particularly rate him and i would've brought on Finnan and played Arbeloa at LB, but that's by the by. The lad has served the club for a long time, mostly he's done fairly well and he doesnt deserve some of the vitriol on here. I'll put it down to heat of the moment, but in reality, some people should be ashamed.

My feelings from last night are gutted at how it happened, but immensely proud of the lads for dominating a £350m team.
Alright who are you and what have you done with DJS?

      Top post mate.

You cant legislate for freak goals like that and i'm so gutted, but at the same time, JAR had to play the ball and whether we slate him or not, he's gonna be absolutely devestated with what happened. He doesnt need his own 'supporters' putting the boot in, he'll be tearing himself to pieces anyway.

As i said, i dont think he's a great player or anything, but he gives his all and he cant help not being uber-talented.

Bet he never slept a wink last night. Feel desperately sorry for the lad but that sympathy only extends so far. He's a professional footballer on about £35k a week and he still can't kick a football with his right foot. It's just not good enough.

Riise has been on the decline a heck of a long time. Why didn't Rafa get rid of him?

Its the teams own fault for not capitalising on their dominance.

Well, he was voted the best defender at the U20 WC last year and that at the age of 18.

Riise simply isn't good enough anymore.

                Carra-------Hyypia-----Skrtel-----Arbeloa

That should be the back four at Plastic Bridge.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I haven't read through the whole thread cause it just depresses me but need to get my opinion of my chest.

Firstly - How he **** did Kalou, in the 94th minute of a Champions league semi final, in front of the kop, find so much space from a throw in, by the corner flag, that he was able to control, look up, turn and whip a hell of a dangerous cross into the POMO() area.

That for me is the first, vital error.

oh and you can't be off side from a throw in

Secondly, when the it first got whipped in I was fully expecting reina to be out to claim it, my memory is hazy this morning but from what i remember the ball came across bounced past the first man by the near post (drogba?) and breathed a sigh of relief thinking reina would collect - then ****! if anything goes in and around the six yard box you want you keeper to be all over it, maybe his arse went. which leaves me onto the third

Riise, poor lad has had a ****ing mare this year, it's so easy to blame riise but there were other mistakes as above. imo I think riise is expecting reina to claim it. To be fair to riise, he has done his jobs in terms of tracking his man, getting goal side etc and got into the right position. I reckon he expected to see reina out to claim, reina stayed on his line and he had to react quick. People can criticise him for heading it in, and fair enough it was a ****ing terrible mistake. But if he had gone to kick it, miss hit and scored the og or just missed the ball and anelka tapped it in all those people complaining would be saying "ffs he's ****e why didn't he just direct a header wide"

It was a terrible mistake - and i'm ****ing gutted for him but in reality we should have had the game sown up, we played well and created chances and we should have been 2-3 nil up, chelsea looked all over the shop at the start of the second half.

Anyway, there is a long way to go and maybe it's a blessing in disguise - firstly chelsea will be favourites, meaning we are the underdogs which how we like it.

Secondly rather than going there having to defend a goal lead (something i hate going through) we have to go there and score, we have to attack and we have to get at them - it's there for us to win and chelsea to bottle it.

thirdly, they play the mancs at the weekend in a massive game and they will play there full squad - we can effectively write of this weekend and have a whole preparing for the 2nd league.

The whole thing would have been avoided if Mascherano had been able to beat 15 yards with his lame attempt at a clearance. But of course, it's Riise who'll be the fall guy. The point is, you can look in several places and say 'why did that happen'...why didnt Mascher clear? Why did Arbeloa let the cross come in? Why didnt Reina claim the cross? You can that all day but sometimes, freak incidents happen and you cant help them.

Apportioning blame is wrong, we need to stick together and remain unified. Our only hope of getting the job done is if team spirit is 150%.

We have to stick together on this one, no finger pointing, no slating and no division.

I haven't time to read every commet in this thread so i don't know if i'm repeating a point made earlier and i don't want to slate one of our players as he obviously didn't intend what happened but the crime in this for me is that a professional footballer only has one foot, that is inexcusable. If the ball had come in from the other side and he sliced it into his own net with his left foot i would have no problem with him but the fact that he felt he had to head it is a joke. This isn't the first time his lack of a second foot has cost us, if i remember correctly at the same goal a few years ago in a league match against Chelsea he could have scored a tap in with his right but tried to put it on his left and the chance was closed down.

I coached 8 and 9 year old kids in Gaelic football a few years ago and at the end of every training session we played a match and the first 5 minutes were always weak side only, the kids gave out at first but after about a month they started using their weak foot in matches and scoring with same, for a 27/8 year old footballer to be still one sided is a farce, the coaching staff should have sorted this out long ago.

these things happen - margin for error is tiny, he might have missed judged the bounce, it might have skipped or spun of the turf quickly, he may have took his eye off it and caught it wrong, he may have had a shout from reina like "time" so thought he was ok, looked over his shoulder and seen anelka and had to deal with it, he might have had one eye on anelka's run, he might have been expecting anelka to be closer and hew waiting for a smack to the head, reina may have said keepers and then not come leaving jar with 0.0001 secs to react. Shall I go on

A player must always expect that the ball will end up at him and react in that way, Riise didn't.
