I love some of the available smilies, particularly this one which I see is used extensively by many posters

    Welcome mate.

this is our fault. we should have either sold him last year when the likes of city were interested or made him sign a new contract, regardless if we were to sell him a season later. a bit like xabi who only last year signed a new contract. you think we'd learn after owen and mcmanaman

Isn't that what we tried to do though? As far as I can remember we tried to sell him to City but Crouch turned the move down. We also offered him a new contract last summer when everyone else signed theirs but refused to sign that too. This has left us in the position we are in now. His refusal to either take the move to City or sign the new contract might be what annoyed the management and led to him playing less this season than he would have liked.

                    Reds Let Crouch Leave
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is likely to be granted his wish of leaving the club, after they finally backed down on their ambitious asking price…

The 27-year-old was aghast when Reds boss Rafa Benitez announced it would take at least ₤15 million to prize the lanky target-man away from Anfield.

Aston Villa and Portsmouth had expressed interest in bringing back their former striker, but Liverpool’s lofty price tag seemed to scare off all potential suitors, much to Crouch’s chagrin.

The England international had previously intimated his desire to leave Merseyside in search of regular football, in order to stay well and truly in view of Three Lions boss Fabio Capello.

The former Southampton man has received few first-team opportunities in recent times, as Spanish import Fernando Torres has clearly established himself as Benitez’s first-choice forward since arriving last summer from Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool gradually favoured a 4-2-3-1 system throughout the season, meaning Crouch was basically reduced to filling in when Torres was injured or rested – although he did usually impress when given the chance.

But Crouch’s hopes of regular football have taken a turn for the better, as Benitez and co are prepared to knock up to ₤5 million off their asking price, according to The S*n.

Pompey had an initial ₤7 million bid rejected, but Harry Redknapp may well snare his man if he can up the number to ₤10 million.

Villa are also still in the hunt, and as Gareth Barry looks increasingly likely to leave the Midlands in favour of Merseyside, the possibility remains of a swap deal that would see Crouch return to Villa Park.

                    Mike Maguire

Looks like Crouchy's comments may have worked! If true of course

I'd be pleased if we get 10 mil for him with only 12 months to go on his contract

I'm a big Crouch fan but I accept that he's got to leave because as long as Rafa persists with this nonsense formation there's not really a place in the team for him.

Still, we will need to sign a replacement as I would cry a little if we had to start games with Kuyt or Voronin as our main striker if Torres gets another knock like he did this season, or if he needs a break. Nemeth isn't there yet and Babel too would be too heads-down and doesn't have much in the way of aerial ability.

The difficulty would be finding a decent lone striker type who is willing to spend most of the time sitting on the bench.

If we can get a fee for him that would be great but if Crouch digs his heels in an wants a free transfer next season i say let him linger in the reserves next year.

Looks like Rafas comments worked more like. Ask for an inflated fee and leave clubs looking like they got a bargain. Had Rafa asked for £10m we'd have ended up with £8m or something.

It's just the same as what all clubs do. Bid low and raise, and ask for dramatic figures and lower. Meeting in the middle is what it's all about.

He's frustrated at not playing and rafa has admitted he's fighting Torres for the one attacking position (oh joy I love this new system that the entire world seems to have adopted at present). He won't play anywhere near enough games next season unless torres were to get injured. even then one of the other two prolific hitmen on our books would no doubt get the nod.

No one is going to pay £15M. So he stays and gives his all for us when called upon and leaves for free at the end of his contract. we've had £7M value out him surely? I can't stand this attitude that every liverpool player must obey, honour and revel in the brilliance personified that is Rafa Bentitez. The guy does **** up on occassions.
I simply cannot understand why people are supporting Crouch over Rafa in this matter. Maybe Rafa feels that he would rather have Crouch on the bench for a year and then loose him for free rather than let him go for 8-10 million.
Maybe Rafa feels that unless he gets in a ridiculous offer for Crouch he does not want to let him go.

I am not saying that Rafa is infallible but whenever there is a manager vs player issue in liverpool, we have always supported the manager. It is not like Rafa is going to use the extra Crouch money to buy himself a yatch. He is doing it so that we as a club get more money.

If Crouch is desperate to leave there is one thing he can do to ensure that bidding team bids an amount acceptable to Rafa. Take a paycut so that the difference in money can be used to make a higher bid. Fernando Torres did it. Why not Crouch.
