What's the point of making anything illegal? Any law is basically a prioritisation of freedoms. In this case it is seen as more important to help people observe Ramadan in keeping with a religious practice that has a bearing on ones after-life than it is to allow people the convenience of drinking in public during the daylight hours of about one month a year.

So on one level I find it totally ludicrous because I don't share the belief in those priorities. I don't believe in any after-life or that Ramadan must be observed in any way for any purpose. From that point of view I find it ridiculous, yes. But when all is said and done I can accept that it makes perfect sense to other people. What is different can often seem ridiculous but we should understand that it is only ridiculous to us.

I'm not even going to take that seriously, seriously specious analogy

Would you find it ludicrous if they said "It i illegal to breathe during daylight hours in public in case it offends someone"?

I would and I don't see the distinction.

Anyway, why can't you respect my view that I think it's ridiculous?

rnm is funny, funny like funny haha.

The distinction is that there is no benefit to be gained from making it illegal to breathe during daylight hours in public. You are basically denying the benefit of the law against publically drinking in daylight during Ramadan because it's a spiritual benefit that to you does not exist. Well it doesn't exist to me either which is why I said it makes no sense to me on one level. But it is something that is very real to an awful lot of people in Saudi Arabia, and it is they who should make the laws to benefit themselves, not us.

We can argue whether from within their worldview the good outweighs the bad or not, but unfortunately with religion that is usually a dead end argument.

Well I think it's ridiculous and that has no relation to my thoughts about Muslims and Islam, it realtes to my feelings about that country and it's human rights record.
You differ, we'll never reach a common ground on this one so it's best left.

I wouldn't let the country's human rights record colour your understanding of this particular issue, but as you say we differ fundamentally and never the twain shall meet.

I've just realised I've unintenionally observed Ramadan today LOL

Do you want to re-write the Qur'an - You can't enforce your beliefs onto other people. Some tolerance goes a long way.

                    Chill Winston...

And it hasn't, except Bob seems to be insinuating that I am an Islamaphobe.

Well Bob, whether you're being serious or not(I hope you're not because it's a seroiusly insulting accusation), you've missed the point. I have no problem with Islam or Muslims, but I do have a problem with Saudi Arabia's laws and human rights record.

As for the Winston quip, well again you're wrong. However, Winston Churchill did fight persecution so you are right on that front.

I remember asking this last year, if I'm not wrong it was later in the year wasn't it - closer to the winter? Two years ago Ramadan was in December so it was only about 9 hours of 'fasting'.

There are quite a lot of Muslims in my work and they say its actually quite easy to fast due to their beliefs - its all for Allah/Mohammed (excuse my ignorance as I'm not looking this up) and they will make any sacrifice for him. They awaken at about 5am and have a full dinner plus prayer and get ready for the day ahead so its not too bad - the real problem is the fourth week when the body starts to shut down during the day due to the lack of nutrients and water, most Muslims take the 4th week off work as it gets unbearable to see other people eat of drink. I've been apologetic at times grabbing a water but they didn't mind - its their belief and not ours, and the guys in my work don't have a hatred of western beliefs.

Remember that its only a few years since we started playing on a Sunday, 'our' religious day. There was a christian footballer once who wouldn't play in an early sunday match, I forget who. All 'faiths' have their strange beliefs, not just muslims.

I wonder why Momo doesn't object to Carslberg on his shirt like Kanoute does for Sevilla/Bet888?

because that would be taking the piss!!!

I thought the religious man was supposed to be respectfull and respect other peoples beliefs etc....

if kanoute has done that then he is clearly very misguided.

Go and live in saudi arabia then freddy, but there are probably more prostitutes and places to get alcohol there than in most western cities.
