imo it was more to do with the influence gary mac had than anything else. he scored, he created.Originally posted by nbryan1764 View PostHe had a spell if I recall where he scored against Chelsea, Newcastle in the Cup (2??) and Newcastle in the league??
Nevertheless its crap - top 5 scorers in 2004 scored a combined 56, top 5 in 2001 combined 83
not because i'm doubting you but i would like to see the 2001 top scorers and see what went wrong

Emile Heskey 22
Robbie Fowler 17
Steven Gerrard 10
Danny Murphy 10
What went wrong was that we replaced decent players with crap ones, and some of the decent ones we had (Heskey, Henchoz to a degree) were shot to bits. Its fairly simple really!

yea our failure to compete post 2001 had very little to do with money but everything to do with the manager and the players he brought in.Originally posted by nbryan1764 View PostMichael Owen 24

absolutely through your presentation of the facts and reasonable dialogue you have convinced me of this.Originally posted by nbryan1764 View Postand therefore...in 2004 the squad was significantly weaker, both in ability and confidence, than in 2001
i still think that the 2004 team wasn't as bad as gerrard made out, after all we finished 4th and only with a net spend of single figures rafa won the champions league the next year.

It does however lead to looking forward when people say we have not progressed. I think we have from that horror show...significantly!

heOriginally posted by nbryan1764 View Postthankyou but it does go to show, even though he doesn't like to back down, if he (or she sorry if I am being presumptious) is debated with and shown facts to back up without insults then its a nicer world!!!!
still think its a myth that's talked about regarding how bad we were, though it adds to the rafa legend.
i can picture it now fredo's great nephews sat around the fire whilst he talks about the legendary rafa benitez who saved us from dropping out of the league, with a net spend of minus 500 million he conquered all and won back to back titles never playing the same players twice.

I fairness to rage he is not a pathetic poster. I might disagree with (a lot) of what he says in regards to Rafa but he debates his points of view and sticks to his guns which is admirable. A lot of people gave you the benefit of the doubt lad so your in no position to throw ****.Originally posted by pezzzerso your saying we wont be owned by a dubai based company then?and of course you know this do you?
the difference is rage that im still confident that we will b owned by some great dubai based investors soon, where as you would see us crash and burn justb so you can be proved right.
pathetic poster that you are.Dare we believe

04 had a decent first 11 but sh1te squad, but even the first 11 were playing shyte and out of form. nothing inconsistent with gerrard's statement there. basically they were bad.
rafa sorted out tactics for a cup competition, and off we went. we were still as sh1te in the league and the squad depth was still sh1t.
but rafa made the most of what he had and we had a great end to the season.
but as a squad, 01/02 was better and they played better football too. today however is the best squad.

where did bruno score 4 goals. what a signing. he was too scared to get mud on his white boots to worry about playing any football
