but the team souness played in was fantastic - they carried all before them and won loads - who says the standard wasnt as good ? is it not the case our team was just too good ?

I wasn't having a go, just making a point that he has performed in big games.
Without Gerrard we'd have won hardly anything over the last few years and we would not have even sniffed the Champions league final in Istanbul, never mind have won it. He does get stifled against the mancs and chavs a lot because they go all out to stop him. In the main we have had no other threat so stopping Gerrard used to mean stopping Liverpool.
