His heart was obviously in the right place, and the fact he often dipped into his own pocket for the sake of the club shows the depth of feeling. However, he didn't have the acumen to see back in the late nineties the changing face of English football. He was too soft and too slow to react to take advantage of the clubs standing in the game.

His final failure was his inability to spot the cloud on the horizon what was the Credit Crunch, I've not doubt that the Hicks & Gillette partnership looked good on paper, and that the old Americans talked a good game. However he gambled the on nature of how these guys do business, and the only way Liverpool would finance the stadium with the American's is with huge loans from large international organisations/banks. Well we all know what happened to the levels of credit Is he to blame? Probably not, there were some voices out there saying the good times wouldn't last - but who was listening? Too few it seems.

Perhaps this latest news just coincides with Parry leaving his post.

I think he was too much of a fan. He probably needed a bit if distance from the team & the people he employed (Parry, Evans, Houllier etc), to make solid business decisions. Plus, inheriting a successful business (Littlewoods) means he's not had to hone his business skills the hard way. He's a true Red & did his best for the Club; his best just wasn't good enough.

      Thanks for Rafa though!

The guy was a little unprofessional in his acceptance of the US bid (which he did with the best intentions) but other than that he dipped his hand in his pocket when he could. I hope to see that black leather jacket at an EC final soon.

Surely you would do your research when selling the "Family Silver". All it takes is a quick search of Google to see what Hicks was like as an owner.

Either Moores a) Was so incompetent and did nothing to find out about the background of GG and TH or
          b) He was told about their "Business Ethics" but was happy with the larger amount of cash on offer

A Liverpool guy through and through he may be but he is the main person responsible for the mess we are in with these owners and he has never come out publicly and admitted it was his fault and said sorry to the fans. Hopefully he can do this now he has resigned from the board.

If he'd been good at his job and sorted things out in the ninties he wouldn't have had to sell the club, if we'd sorted the stadium out then it would have cost half what it does now and if we'd gone down the same road as the mancs with the commercial deals we could have brought in better players...

I think I am in the minority here in that I am not going to single Moores out as a hate figure as has already been suggested.

The bloke did his best for the club, wrong or right I don't think anyone can question him in that respect. He had a duty to listen to the offer from the Yanks, and a requirement to inform the board of the offer on the table. This is also a man that when times were hard dipped into his own pocket to allow Rafa to sign Kuyt.

People talk about him like he is the enemy, but at the end of the day I see him as one of us. He didn't want to sell the club he loves, probably the hardest thing he has done, and yeah he messed up. Who hasn't. I remember at the time we all bought the chat the yanks were giving us and the feeling around the sites was a good one.

Maybe he accepts that it is his fault the state we are in, but as a board member until now I don't think he could have said anything about it. I for one don't care if he does come out and apologise anyway, he is not the one that promised a debt free club to everyone, that was the yanks. He is not the one that promised the shovel in the ground in 60 days or whatever. He may have brought them in, but not all that follows can be labeled as his fault.

I agree with most of your post there Rich but failing to spot the credit credit wass something Moores had in common with the rest of the world. We can have him for that one. Ask General Motors!

I was trying to get the point across that Moores probably wouldn't have seen the credit bubble bursting... however the Americans business case rises and falls with the amount of easy credit available.

but most people didnt take 5 years to do something and still make an almighty **** up and i dont profess to know the inner workings of Anfield but to me he is bailing out, he should be fighting tooth and nail to sort out this **** he created.

Fine he made a mistake.....well sort it out Freddy, stay and fight put right your wrongs not do a runner after admitting your **** up.

He wasn't daft enough to pocket a few more millions of pounds for the club, was he?

It's a disgrace of Drogba proportions that he remains in his comfy position of honorary president for life.

totally uncalled for abuse going on here

how many can say they weren't happy with G&H on the day we played in Athens? we all sang along and thought they were the real deal

what worries me about this is that post takeover, both Moores and Parry remained on the board and where able to veto decisions made by H&G - like putting more debt on the club.

I would have thought they both felt strong enough to continue this role with the americans in charge - could this signal a change of ownership or are they jumping ship before the crap with the refinancing starts?
