Gerrard is 29 and I'm sure Rafa will try to curb his attacking instincts and convert him into a more rounded/defensively minded midfielder as soon as he finds a perfect foil for Torres upfront, someone like David Villa for example (not meaning it has to be Villa - but you get my point).

I think that's where, long term, that we'll see Gerrard playing. It's simply because of the fact that sooner rather than later, he's going to lose his pace and his power, and that his energy will need conserving.

Isnt Lampard 31? He's still scoring plenty of goals from attacking midfield.

To generalise the point (and refer back to an earlier part of the discussion) I do wonder If there is a correlation between the posters who didn't rate Kuyt and Lucas (and the same for those who defend them).

That wasn't making it personal, that was just pointing out a minor trend in your prior posting that might throw some light on your current efforts. Nowt wrong with a little context.

You just have to look at the list though to see that there is an element of the small sample size to those results. I actually think that paticularly against a team like Burnley a better/quicker passer like Lucas might be a better option than Mascherano even if he might be a less able destructive player.

It always surprises me that people feel we should attack these teams more and don't even consider that it might be an option to compromise somewhat on the defensive qualities of the most deep lying midfielder.

You could look back at last years numbers and you would see that Lucas was our top tackler by quite a margin.

I think you make some valid points there.

I remember an aritcle done by Vickery when we signed Lucas saying he was a Gerrard type box to box player however since his arival we have seen very little of this. To compare anyone to the likes of Gerrard is stupid IMO because we are talking about a player who is at the top echelons of the game and a player who would walk into any team. Lucas did contribute in an attacking sense last season in fact I recall one defense splitting pass to Stevie G against Newcastle resulting in a goal which was very reminiscent of Alonso.

There are lots Lucas can improve on but I do think that he deserves a little bit of credit and time for the attitude and professionalism he is showing. He is clearly highly thought of at Melwood and every interview I read or hear is about him wanting to improve and wanting to become a better player. He is improving and hopefully we will see in develop into the dynamic midfielder we thought we were getting when we signed him.

If memory serves me, the figures may well be in this thread somewhere, that is only true of one source of stats and most of the complete season stats suggest otherwise (although he still performed very well in that area).
