Indeed. I have no problem with Insua apart from thinking he needs a break from the team to regain some confidence.

Skrtel has been and always will be a cunt. Now I'm more than happy to throw in the words useless, gutless and thick. Looks hard but can't jump, can't stay on his feet, can't help losing his man, can't help diving in from behind, can't help but losing concentration. Liability.

It's his recklesness that bugs me. He's so rash, always piling through the back of people in harmless areas.

Well I wrote Gerrard off after we lost to Watford 1-0 at home at the start of the 99/00 season so I know **** all.

Too short, can't pass and looked like a little boy lost.

Ok and what about the run he had in the first team when Agger was injured before he got injured were he was universally lauded as outstanding by fans and neutrals alike ..

sure i get he does not look half as assured as he did that season but he is still young and needs a run if you ask me

that'll be the 'thick' side of him.

I hate the way he looks hard yet seems in pain with the merest of challenges. He should be a threat from every corner. He should be looking to throw himself at balls knowing he'll get hurt.

ok. thats your opinion. I haven't liked him from day one. He never won me over. I'll admit he looked better last season. But the faults were still there for all to see.

This thread has taken a surprising turn and become much more positive. Excellent news.

When people complain about this season compared to last they seem to forget that:
                (a) by design we have a much MUCH more attacking right-back than we had last season, and that is bound to have implications for our defence;
                (b) perhaps not as much by design, we have also had to change our left back. He is very young, which has its disadvantages (as well as its advantages).
                (c) we have also been forced to change one of our key midfield players and have had to rely heavily on another youngster. Tell me one other midfielder other than Fabregas that its Lucas' age and being asked to carry such a burden. Bearing that in mind, I think he is doing really really well.
                (d) key players have been struggling with long-term injuries and the thinness of our squad (caused partly by a lack of money, partly by a decision to start buying £15m+ players, partly by injuries and partly by a loss of form of too many of the reserves) means injured players are having to play and are therefore not recovering their fitness.

Bearing all that in mind, what we see on the pitch is not surprising. Frustrating yes, but not an excuse for some of the crazy rants and crazy ideas that keep appearing on these pages.

A rare voice of reason but no !! we must batter everybody week in week out regardless of circumstances

                    i agree with shaggy.

as a defender, skrtel is probably better than merely ok.

but the way he piles into people from behind in unimportant areas (as well as dangerous areas) is really unnerving. he could be better, but it's mostly his decision making that makes me cringe when i see he's about to make an ill-advised tackle.

                      Nice word.

He's gash, a defender should be able to defend, if they can do more then great. But they have to get the basics right. He doesn't track players and I've lost count of the number of times I've seen him make a half arsed jump when he realises that an attacker has got into space behind him.

Maybe the lack of a decent option has meant he's been rushed into the side but we can't afford the luxury of learning his trade whilst we are deficient in so many other areas.

Skrtel was a monster last year and now apparently finished? We all get emotional during a game and get the odd rush of blood to the head, but come on, we can all take a breather and review what we've all seen time and time a again in the cycles of a pro career.

Insua is one of the best full backs for his age, Darby looked good in the reserves, **** in the Champions league and solid again vs reading, that's football, especially with youngsters. It would be great if we had a world class player he could deputise for but we haven't, he'll have learnt a lot from the reading game as was demonstrated by the last 30mins compared with the 1st 30 mins. Every full back in football wants some support from in front of him even Maldini used to berate those who left him exposed. To rule out Insua on the basis of a couple of shaky games in a shaky team needs some self inspection. If Gerrard was 19 and playing like he is now, would you all write him off too?
