ManCity fans, still seething over Adebayor ban, have contacted FA to ask it to investigate whether Fellaini elbowed Lucas at Goodison Park

Argentina captain let fly from 30 yards and although his shot appeared to be heading just off target it took a wicked deflection off the Everton centre-back and went spinning past goalkeeper Tim Howard.

That goal gave Liverpool something to hold on to and they defended resolutely under increasing Everton pressure until Dirk Kuyt scored the second after Howard half-saved Albert Riera's shot.

Mascherano, however, is determined to claim the opener, which would be only his fourth career goal after hitting just one for Liverpool and two for Argentina.

"I think it's my goal because I tried to score with the shot," said the 25-year-old, whose celebration in front of the visiting fans at Goodison Park showed just what the strike meant to him.

"It was a really important moment for me because I want to do my best.

"This season some people have criticised my shooting but I am trying hard to improve it and I am happy."

Manager Rafael Benitez believes that although Mascherano's primary role is as a defensive midfielder he is capable of getting more goals.

"Since he arrived here we have been talking about how he can score goals from outside the penalty area," said the Liverpool boss.

"Sometimes he was trying and on Sunday was really good for us, a bit lucky but really good.

"He can try (shooting from distance) because he can do it well."

The win lifted Liverpool up to fifth, two points behind Arsenal, but Mascherano said the players had to put the derby result behind them and look to continue winning.

"It's important for us to keep going. We cannot keep thinking about Sunday," he told liverpoolfc.tv. "It is important for us to try to win three or four more games in a row and keep moving up the table."

      Rafa is encouraging him
Of course he's encouraging him. Should he discourage him from trying to score? Every player is given a goal target for the season - even defenders. Mascherano should be no different. He should have a target and he should try to meet it. And when he grows up he'll know when to have a go and when to pass to a player who has a better opportunity. And then he might take his chances more seriously and get them on target. But for now he is a young man with a target that he is trying to meet.
      Really?

We were poor today, to be honest, Reina bailed us and we scored two goals from nothing. We only had one good attacking play with Johnson crossing to Insua and a bit from Benayoun when he came on, but we still won.
How did Reina bail us out? In the game I watched he only had that double save to make in the entire match and could have leaned against the post reading a book for the rest of the time.

Everton very rarely threatened and while we weren't fantastic we picked them off very well and were cruising at the end with the ball in and around their box, not ours.

If Reina had been flinging himself around all game and keeping them at bay single-handed I'd agree. But he had bugger all to do for 89 minutes, so to make him man-of-the-match is a bit over the top. They never really threatened in the match and fizzled out whenever they got in our final third, so I thought it was all very comfortable
