I think all of you are missing something...if Torres is not 100% fit, which clearly he is not, he should not be expected to lead the line on its own. There needs to be a second striker. (Rafa went down in my estimation by sticking with a single striker when Torres was not available. Ngog should have played with someone along side him to take some of the strain.)

So Torres and Kuyt up front.
If Masch is injured, I'd play Benny Gerrard Lucas Riera in midfield (Aquilani couldn't last much more than ahalf at full pace yet.)
And Degan (if Johnson is injured), Carra, Agger and Aurelio in defence

I'd go with the same team and look for a reaction. It's our best 11, at least until Aquilani gets fit/adapts, so let's try and make as few changes as possible for a while and give them a run...

That said, I'd shake up the bench, and have the likes of Pacheco on there who can turn a game if needed, rather than 3 defenders.

Because I think what we need more than anything else is consistency of selection if we are going to get a bit of form and confidence back. Aquilani looks way off the pace at the moment, so I'd stick with giving him half an hour wherever possible, and hopefully a couple of full reserve games (haven't seen reserve fixtures so not sure if that's possible). The only other alternative would be to drop Stevie back into CM, but I'd rather work on getting him and Torres firing together again as they were last season.

Having the two there is not necessarily a defensive formation, it all depends on what their instructions are and how much the 'wide' players are told to track back. Early in the season when we were scoring goals for fun, Lucas was often making runs into the box or popping up at the back post on crosses. 22 goals in our first 7 league games. It's the chopping and changing due to injury, particularly in defence, that has ruined us. We need to get the same team playing with each other and learning to trust each other again.

Unfortunately the reserves don't play again until the 14th January
