Martin Skrtel has broken a metatarsal in his right foot, Rafa Benitez today confirmed.

The good news of Glen Johnson returning to first-team training this morning was tarnished after x-rays confirmed the worst on an injury Skrtel sustained in the 3-1 victory over Unirea.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We were really disappointed after the game because it was a good result but then we had the bad news about Martin. He's had x-rays today and they confirmed he has a broken metatarsal.

"We have to check over the next couple of days how long it will take to recover, but we expect it to be around three years."

On Johnson, who hasn't featured since sustaining a knee injury in the 1-0 victory at Villa Park in December, Benitez added: "He's doing well. He was training today with the team - a light training session.

"I was watching him and he was quite sharp. But Sunday will be too soon."
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Surely thats not right. Don't think we'll see him again this season.

Well i was banging on for ages about not risking players for this tinpot cup, and there we go. Just thank goodness it wasnt Stevie or Torres. Sure players can get injured in any game, but you can reduce the risk by not picking them for meaningless games. Simple fact, if Skrtel (for example) hadnt played, he wouldnt have got injured.

@ Shaggy, three years You ****er

Yes but Craig, most of us would actually like to win a cup this year.

I'd rather get into the CL and try to secure the competitiveness of the club for the forthcoming seasons.

That would be more pleasing than having the rusty old Uefa Cup sitting there to look at, while we're languishing in 9th place and watching Torres sold to raise loan repayment funds.

And do you really think we couldnt have knocked Unirea out with fringe players? They were pish.

Having said that, you're one of those who'll never ever disagree with anything Rafa does, ever.

                  So what's the point?

I disagree with plenty of things, I just don't post ten page rants about them

Yeah I do think a fringe team wouldn't have beat Unirea, they are no way near as bad as made out.

You just dont post them at all

Unirea were woeful, a fringe XI would've comfortably disposed of them.

Sorry mate, this is a team that beat Sevilla 3-1, drew away with Stuggart and hammered Rangers while not in the top league in Europe by any stretch (though the first eastern European league to produce a European Champion) play in a league which has produced decent teams and players, as Cluj showed last season beating Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico and drawing 0-0 with Chelsea.

So Craig, if you're not going to risk players who would you play then? A bunch of dogs?

And the likes of Bristol City also beat Liverpool one year. I'm sure they wouldnt have anyone quaking in their boots.

Anyone can beat anyone, that doesnt make them that good. They were ****.

I wouldnt risk what i consider to be important first teamers. In this case, it was Skrtel and we're lucky that he's someone we can cope well enough, without. If it was Gerrard, we'd have been pretty ****ed, and likewise Torres, had he played.

                                Go chew on a bone.
