The Chilean, dismissed after just one season at the Bernabéu despite garnering 96 points in the league, was reported to have met Kenny Dalglish at Heathrow on Thursday.
Sources close to Pellegrini deny they have had any contact with the Anfield club, though it is thought his credentials for the position have been discussed by Liverpool’s board.
Fulham’s Roy Hodgson, though, is still believed to have the backing of Liverpool’s hierarchy.
As Liverpool fans look forward to the new Premier League season and an opening-day clash at Anfield with Arsenal, they will be disappointed to hear the news from Javier Mascherano’s agent that the player is in talks with Inter Milan over a possible move to the San Siro, which would mean the Liverpool midfielder is reunited with Benítez.
Speculation has been rife that the Argentina captain Mascherano would move to Italy since Benítez was confirmed as Jose Mourinho’s replacement last week.
Mascherano, who was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer, has spent the past three years at Anfield but contract negotiations have been put on hold and one of his agents, Marco Piccioli, claims the 25 year-old could follow in his former manager’s footsteps.
“There has already been a first contact with [Inter] director Marco Branca,” said Piccioli. “We are evaluating the move hard and in the next few days we will have a new meeting to better establish the details of this transfer deal.”
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
