I'm considering a bet on Lee/Dalglish as the managerial duo at the start of the season. If I was at Villa or Spurs I would consider them in a better shape going into next season at the minute from a managers point of view. They at least have a position they can plan from and relatively stable boards.

Any manager with a job would be taking a massive gamble coming to us.

For me he is the standout candidate by an absolute country mile. Free as well, which in our position cannot be sniffed at.

Capello took over a side out of sorts after they had failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland.

Then coach Steve McClaren was portrayed in the media as “the wally with the brolly”.

But Liverpool FC skipper Gerrard noticed a change almost from the first time Capello took command for the friendly international against Switzerland at Wembley in February 2008.

Now England will aim for World Cup glory this summer full of confidence after topping their qualifying group.

Gerrard said: “From when the manager first took over, there has been a change.

“I think every player has gone on record to say that it was a tough time to play for England a couple of years ago as there was pressure.

“The manager has given us a winning mentality and confidence.”

Gerrard, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Sunday, is refusing to look too far ahead but is confident England can top their initial group.

He said: “I think we can get out of the group as winners and then we take the last-16 challenges on.

“I do not really want to look any further ahead but we have a good mix of experience and fresh talented youngsters.”

Gerrard, Capello and the remainder of the England squad flew into South Africa yesterday morning.

The 23-man party had received the welcome news yesterday of Capello committing his future to England for the next two years through to the 2012 European Championships.

Is Stevie's timing of these comments just a coincidence or not ?
didn't capello just extend his contract for 2 more years with england? He is not a subject IMO, and we couldn't match his wages at england.

Can you imagine? I think if we ended up with that criminal, or indeed any of the other garbage British managers linked so far, I may try and take a sabbatical from the game. I probably wouldn't be able to manage but the thought of being managed by MON, Hughes or Redknapp makes me feel physically ill.

            the bets:

            MARTIN O’NEILL - 9/4

The Aston Villa boss has plenty of fans within the game, but has been at loggerheads with his own board recently. Enjoyed success with Leicester and Celtic, though question marks remain as to his top-level managerial pedigree.

            ROY HODGSON - 7/2

Very much flavour of the month after guiding Fulham to the Europa League final. Hodgson is a calm and well-travelled manager with an eye for moulding teams. Managed Inter Milan to a UEFA Cup final appearance.

            KENNY DALGLISH - 7/2

An Anfield legend, who enjoyed unrivalled success as a player and a manager. Dalglish has worked with the club’s academy for the past year, and is known to command the respect of senior players. Has been out of management for over a decade, however.

            JURGEN KLINSMANN - 8/1

Famously approached by Tom Hicks and George Gillett back in 2007 - whilst Benitez was still manager - Klinsmann has been out of work since a disastrous spell at Bayern Munich in 2008. Speaks well and is highly thought of, especially by Liverpool’s owners.

            GUUS HIDDINK - 8/1

One of the most respected managers around, Hiddink has earned global recognition for his work at club and international level. Has agreed to take over the Turkish national team from August, but has juggled roles before.

            MANUEL PELLEGRINI - 14/1

A victim of the Real Madrid machine, the Chilean forged a solid reputation with Villarreal, and would have won La Liga were it not for the record-breaking exploits of Barcelona. Question marks over his handling of big names may count against him.

            FRANK RIJKAARD - 14/1

A Champions League and La Liga winner, the Dutchman’s reputation was sullied somewhat by a poor end to his Barcelona reign. Now at Turkish giants Galatasaray, though he failed to guide them to the title this year.

            SLAVEN BILIC - 16/1

Made his name by guiding Croatia to Euro 2008 at England’s expense. Stock has fallen since, as his side failed to qualify for World Cup this summer. A former Evertonian, and distinctly unproven at club level.

            MARK HUGHES - 16/1

Suffered at the hands of demanding directors at Manchester City, though many would argue the Welshman failed to make the most of unprecedented transfer spending. Strong Manchester United ties were probably severed by his stint at City, but his credentials are dubious.

            ALEX MCLEISH - 20/1

Has steadily established himself as a solid Premier League coach with Birmingham City. Shrewd in the transfer market, and astute with the press, though again somewhat unproven at European level.

            LOUIS VAN GAAL - 20/1

One of the most successful coaches around. Followed up Dutch league success with AZ by leading Bayern Munich to a domestic double, as well as a Champions League final, his second European Cup win after his victory with Ajax in 1995.

            MARTIN JOL - 33/1

Perhaps harshly written off after leaving Tottenham - whom he guided to the brink of the Champions League - Jol has done ok at both Hamburg and Ajax since, though major honours have always eluded him.

            SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON - 40/1

As nomadic as anyone, Eriksson’s current role is with the Ivory Coast, after mixed stints with Manchester City, Mexico and Notts County in recent years. Tends to follow the big money around, so Anfield looks unlikely.

Same here. It's an utterly depressing thought on top of all my current utterly depressing football related thoughts.

To be honest I'm finding it impossible to get enthused about any potential manager. I want our Rafa back

The game's gone to **** mate. I don't think Rafa will come back.

Apart from new owners, I think Slaven Bilic would be perfect in bringing in a new lease of life for the club. He's a young manager and has quite a similar aura to Mourinho in terms of hands on management. I could see him being in it for the long run and really striking up a relationship with the fans as opposed to someone like Hiddink or Hodgson. He's also a rock star

Absolutely gutted at the moment but I would definitely take Bilic over any other manager in the world.

which to me, frees up Hodgson, who seemed to be angling for the England job. Now, he may be available to us and I don't feel that keen about that prospect.

For **** sake that list makes me sick. I'm seriously starting to hope in a way that next season doesn't swing around. Grim days indeed.

I was wondering that myself, those are the excellent choices. Although Felix Magath is a genuine psycho and could hurt more than help. But he's a proven winner and could get this team playing well. I would absolutely love Hitzfield to manage Liverpool one day.

                            This.

Whether a critic or a fan of Rafa as manager, whether you believed he could turn around what had been happening on the pitch with our existing set of underperforming players or not, the manner of this has been a total disgrace, and now the club has no stability left at all. Rafa undoubtedly loved the club and has always wanted what he thought was the best for the team in the long term. The fact he's stayed on under H&G rather than taking the consistent opportunities elsewhere has shown real loyalty, and has been done even at the risk of his own reputation as a coach a little. He might not have always done the right things, but his motivation was one we could see and believe in and trust. Without that, and with the inevitable behind the scenes changes that will have to take place now (coaching staff, probably some players etc) despite the club being up for sale, who the hell now will look out for the club? Every new appointment will inevitably be tenuous and short-term, instability now runs from the top right to the bottom. And none of it is at all what our football club is supposed to be about.

                            WAS supposed to be about.....
