Not sure what people were expecting with the team we had out there.

Ayala was superb at the back to day
Amoo looked exciting going forward, though lacked a final ball.

Ayala was immense at the back. Hopefully we have two outstanding defensive prospects in Ayala and Wilson.

Jonjo looked good as well. Thought we looked to play long ball to the strikers a bit too often. Would have been nice to see us attempt to pass through them a bit more. All in all, a really good performance considering the age and experience of our players

I agree to a point, we concedded 35 goals last season in the PL only 13 were scored from open play, the rest were scored from set pieces:

Open Play 13
Cross 11
Free Kick 3
Penalty 3
Corner 5

And on that basis i think zonal marking was to blame for a large amount of these, especially the 11 from corners.

why do nearly all top teams play zonal marking?

thing is, before last season, generally we had a settled back 4....whereas last season we barely strung 3 games in a row with the same defense - carra had to be moved to right back when GJ was injured, Agger was injured for long spells and Skrtel was too for a while so the greek came in..... whereas before we had big Sami to come in who could partner anyone at the back and won everything in the air.......

we should really have given Sami the 2 yeatr deal that Bayer Leverkusen gave him...... the greek's wages over the 2 years, plus the transfer fee would have probably paid Sami's wages for ****s sake......also, with the likes of Ayala, Kelly, Darby and now Wilson as well, surely Sami would have been a good guy to have around helping them develiop....

Was it not more guaranteed game time Sami was looking for? He played a lot in Germany doubt he would have got the same minutes on the pitch for us.

it was more game time he was looking for....and the irony was he would have got it last year as well !!

Rafa did the right thing skrtel/Agger/Carragher were always going to play more and we did the honourable thing.

Ayala continues to impress though, I'll be well pissed off if we let him go. Hopefully he's given Roy something to think about.

Amoo did well, Shelvey looked confident but deteriorated. Eccleston won't make it.

Have to agree with that. I was really disappointed with Ecclestone. After watching him with the youths thought he could be the real deal. Was he out of position though? Always saw him as a striker.
