Rafa got slated for being 'negative' but he knew the simple rule of football, that says to win a match, first and foremost, you must not lose it. Stay in the game, even if it means being defensive and keeping it at 0-0, because this is obviously much better than letting the game get away from you.

I dont think Rafa made us a great attacking side, but he sure as hell knows how to make a team difficult to beat. Tonight was the exact opposite - we were easy to beat, and that is unacceptable.
    Agreed.

And the bit you quoted about Gerrard is 100% correct IMO.

Gerrard has to play the advanced role. We could line up with 8 ****e players plus Pepe, Nando and Gerrard, and if Stevie gets close to Torres they can win games for you on their own. He was nowhere near Fernando tonight, our two best players totally disconnected.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

ok that was a bit tongue in cheek, but the real bottom line is that we were absolutely aimless in that 4-4-2. nobody seemed to know where to go or what to do. i think one reason that our width suffered so much is that kuyt and mijo seemed to have been told to tuck in and help out in the middle. which did exactly no good.

Problem is, when Mascherano goes, who plays as our two DMs?

Lucas and Poulsen? Slightly unconvincing for me.

We could do with a powerful, strong DM in there, someone like Yaya Toure or De Jong.

If we sell Mascherano for £25m or so, plus the apparent £10m or so we have, we need to find a way of making £35m stretch to a new 2nd choice lone striker, a powerful holding midfielder and a creative/direct PROPER winger.

Debatable whether it'd be enough to get all three. Even more debatable whether we'd get it to spend.

Re the striker, i'd take someone like Carew, and Villa are a selling club...

well you will have missed George and Bungle in the sky studio. Basically Gray said that Gerrard was playing in his true position his right position. blah ****ing blah. You get your best player and build a team round him in his best position, Andy Gray and plenty others think this apparently

They seem to forget that under Rafa, Gerrard and Torrres were a phonemenal pairing when both fit.

have to say it was almost more dire than some of those matches last season. also worrying was a system that didn't work, going 2 goals down, and still, apparently, no coaching going on. i really wonder what hodgson was thinking while he was sat there not doing anything.

We're linked with Diarra in one tomorrows(todays) papers but then again we're linked with about 10 different players on a daily basis.

Craig, with all due respect kid we sorely lacked Poulsens "get the**** in there" attitude, we were totally dominated in midfield and in truth the mancs were worth there 3 goal margin. Wotk to be done!

Maybe we did. His fitness was always going to be an issue, but after seeing that shambles, he couldnt have done any worse than Lucas. Hindsight is 20:20 though, i suppose.

I'd appreciate it if you didnt call me 'kid' though, please mate. Probably not intended to be patronising, but it comes across that way.
