The thing is he was your first hero which probably makes him you hero for the long hall. That is like me and Torres. It doesn't matter which club he moves to or what happens he will always be my idol...

Yep there is that...there's also the fact Barnes was just ****ing brilliant, one of our true all-time greats.Originally posted by Fernandinho View PostThe thing is he was your first hero which probably makes him you hero for the long hall. It was Barnes and Beardsley for me, i loved them both and still do. It is GENUINELY difficult to fully explain to people who never saw Barnes, just how out of this world he was. Literally out of this world. Today's equivalent - and i'm not even exaggerating, is Messi. Not in terms of the position they play - but just in terms of sheer brilliance and how often he could just win games on his own.
It's sad to think that young fans nowadays, they see Barnes and Beardsley now, as 50 year olds or whatever they are, middle aged and looking nothing like superstar footballers.
My old man used to say the same about Jimmy Greaves
He'd say "yeah you see him on Saint and Greavsie, and you know about his drinking and all that - and you cant look at that and possibly comprehend just how incredible a player he was"

It's the same for everyone mate. There'll always be genius players who played a little before your time. As i mentioned in the Dalglish thread, Kenny's peak years were before my time, and i feel bad at missing that. Same with Souness a few years before, as i'm told he was an utter colossus for us.Originally posted by Fernandinho View PostI think you might get the same feelings for those players before your time like I do for these guys. Going back as late as Brazilian Ronaldo, I feel like I had missed out on brilliance that people 10 or so years older then me enjoyed watching.
And likewise, then i've got my old man telling me about people like Greaves and even Pele
It's never ending

Yeah it's frustrating. I'm sad at just missing out on Souness and Dalglish, and other great players who we didn't have the privilege of seeing, like Cruyff, so many Brazilians like Zico, Falcao and a load of others who were just before our time.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostIt's the same for everyone mate. Course I saw him and remember him, but one tournament at the back end of his career isn't enough and I missed his peak. I don't remember any of the 82 World Cup (unfortunately). It's a bit like someone getting into football in 1993 and saying they remember John Barnes (as a fat central midfielder)
....I don't feel it counts.

My earliest cup memory has to be 2002 WC. Which was all Italy for me seeing as Australia had choked in qualifying, from winning 2-0 in the last qualifier to loosing it 2-2 on (aggregate loss, but thats another story). I remeber us being constantly cheated out of goals vs Mexico and others. Best memory I have is Vieri scoring that goal and running past the South Korean supporters telling them to shushOriginally posted by Craig_H View Post
Fair point. World Cup 1986 is the earliest international football tournament i remember. I dont remember Euro 1984. But England's performance at Euro 1988 more than made up for it
That is probably also my earliest memory of any game, followed by the 2003 CL final which Juve lost in penalties

Brilliant post!
I'd almost forgotten how brilliant John Barnes in his pomp was ! He had absolutely everything in his locker!
Scored perhaps Englands best ever goal as well!!

I do indeed, while the Geordie's thought they'd win everything because the had MirindinhaOriginally posted by Craig_H View Post
that's so my era
Do you remember the 1-4 win at Newcastle, when Nicol scored that hat trick?
Brilliant stuff. I think they even went ahead that day, before we 'clawed back' 4 goals
, then they got relegated the following season
I also remembers ripping City apart at Maine Rd in the FA Cup while the media wanked over Paul Stewart.
