This thread is priceless..........
Barnes was quite simply breathtaking to watch...
He would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when he played - We haven't seen a winger like "Digger" since..
Cheers Craig for pulling that link - it certainly brightened up my saturday...
DALGLISH !! :respect

Sorry to lower the tone but this made me lolOriginally posted by Fernandinho View PostYou are so old
But yeah his balls were so so good. The way he effortlessly crossed with those light gliding feet. I think what makes him look even better is he makes it all look so easy, he doesn't need to do a Ronaldinho/Ronaldo and throw in a million step overs to get passed a player, he just glided away. I notcied that with Beardsley, was he the number 7 who crossed a few headers for him from the right? Because in a few of the goals they were heavily involved together in the lead up play. He also played the 1 2 ball exceptionally well im assuming?
Agree with the gliding bit though, he really did breeze across the pitchSack swinging like Dub-D40 on a door hinge

Great business - also brought Aldridge and Houghton in in that transfer period, using the Ian Rush proceeds. All were pivotal.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostCompletely a team player, yeah. And Aldridge clearly loved the service, as did Rush. Some of those crosses were sublime, the famous ones against Forest in the FA Cup semi final when Aldridge volleyed home - and then the one against Everton in the 89 Cup final, for Rush to score the winner - talk about 'corridor of uncertainty'
It was inch perfect, that ball.
The understanding he had with Beardsley was something to behold as well - we basically bought the two best players in the country, in the same summer - Barnes cost £1.8m if i remember correctly and Beardsley was just £900k
Big money in those days - believe it or not.

it seems i am about the same age as Shaggy and Craig H
born in 77 thankfully i have been alive for all our 5
I thought barnes and Beardo and Aldo were class
i even remember not wanting Rush back. Even as a youngster i thought look to the future not the past.
Rush was a great player too
If we had been in Europe how good would that team have been, its hard to tell as we fell tactically behind as league but i am sure we should have won another EC with that team. Playing in Europe would have made them better too.

I havn't even seen us win the league! I cried like a big baby when we won in Istanbul so if we win the league i think my head will explode
That game against Notts Forest in about 87/88 season was it? when we battered them 5-0 i think, Barnes Beardsley and Aldo where ****ing brill! Talking of former players Terry Mcdermott what a player! that header against Spurs at Anfield when we beat them 7-0 was ****ing amazing! Spurs "golden years" Villa, Ardiles and the likes and they got well and truely mullered!
When we hang the capitalists they will sell us the rope we use.

First time I ever cried watching football!Originally posted by Shaggy View PostCried my eyes out. Three of us watched it at my mates...after the full-time whistle his Dad (not remotely into football) came in to the room to laugh at us all crying and started taking photos.
That's harsh about your mates dad tho!!

So many memories from that era. Panini sticker books, were huge Ronnie Whelan chipping Grobbelaar from 30 yards out at Old Trafford in possibly one of the finest (and most painful) own goals ever, signing Mikey Thomas right after he stitched us in 89...Originally posted by Mattshark View PostI remember those days, the opening game away at Arsenal and Stevie Nicol scoring the winner with a header from the edge of the penalty area, Barnes ripping QPR apart before leaving Seaman helpless. My first game the following season at home to Brentford in the FA cup and then the 5-1 win over Sheff Wed a couple of weeks later.

Barnes remains my favourite Liverpool player, the team of the late 80's was awesome. I would have loved to have seen them up against the great Milan team of that era, imo we would have had much more the 5 European cups to our name.We come not to play.
