You see Barnes kicking round Liverpool now and again, and every time I have seen him, he's been wearing an ankle length leather coat, black clothes, shades and a mobile constantly stuck to the side of his head. Maybe he thinks he's Morpheus nowadays.

I remember meeting him in the Shrew in Oxton 10 years ago, he was doing the pub quiz there.

No, I can't remember how he was dressed, but he didn't look like a that.

We won the title in 1990. 89 was the fateful year when we had Arsenal last game (on a Friday night) and they had to beat us by 2 clear goals at Anfield, to win the title - if they didnt, we'd have won it.

They scored a goal via Alan Smith, from an indirect freekick - and i still maintain, to this day, that he never actually touched the ball from his 'glancing header' so the ball actually went in directly - but the ref gave it.

And then of course, Michael Thomas raced through somehow, in stoppage time, and scored to make it 0-2 and win the title for them. Heartbreaking stuff. I was only just coming upto my 10th birthday and i cried

Barnes didnt leave until the mid 90s, but he was well past his best by then - his legs/pace had gone and he was reverted to a central midfielder - and not a 'dynamic' one He left in 1997, at the beginning of the 1997-98 season, and went to newcastle. He didnt retire until 1999 after a short spell at Charlton.

Fowler didnt really emerge until about 1993, i think. Our dominant team was over by then And when he first emerged, he was still trying to break his way into the team properly.

The european ban was indeed as a result of Heysel, yes.

Aldridge doesnt get the acclaim that Fowler got, simply because a) he wasnt at LFC for that long and b) because he was one of many superb players, whereas Fowler didnt play for such a brilliant side, so his talent stuck out like a sore thumb, due to the fact that our side wasnt then filled with great players, ulike the side from the mid-late 1980s. Aldridge was only at Liverpool for 2 and a half seasons, but he scored something like 60 goals in 100 games. Absurdly prolific.

To be fair, Alan Smith has always been cerebrally challanged, to put it politely, and he probably wasn't aware if it touched his head or not either.

That was an incredible quartet. The best piece of business the club has ever done, they might have cost us, amongst the four of them, the paltry sum of around £4.5m.

Not sure, I only remember his funny face, awkward style and actually decent goalscoring record. He was a bit of a super sub for us.

It was Barnes and Beardsley for me, i loved them both and still do. It is GENUINELY difficult to fully explain to people who never saw Barnes, just how out of this world he was. Literally out of this world. Today's equivalent - and i'm not even exaggerating, is Messi. Not in terms of the position they play - but just in terms of sheer brilliance and how often he could just win games on his own.

It's sad to think that young fans nowadays, they see Barnes and Beardsley now, as 50 year olds or whatever they are, middle aged and looking nothing like superstar footballers.

My old man used to say the same about Jimmy Greaves He'd say "yeah you see him on Saint and Greavsie, and you know about his drinking and all that - and you cant look at that and possibly comprehend just how incredible a player he was"

Not wanting to detract from this completely justified Barnes wankfest but, it also needs mentioning how brilliantly the man held himself in spite of some serious racist abuse that he had to endure on a regular basis.

Amazingly, he suffered masses of abuse from England fans (critical not racist) when he played for his country simply for not being able to recreate his club form. Simple truth though was that Liverpool v England in the mid 80s would've been a total rout as we were so ****ing suberb.

There was one occasion though where England fans got a glimpse of our man...
