Hodgson - No knee jerk reaction

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson insists he will not be forced into a knee-jerk reaction after the club's shock Carling Cup defeat to Northampton.

Wednesday's penalty defeat was the first time the Reds had lost to a fourth-tier team in the League Cup and was their worst result since an FA Cup third-round loss against non-league Worcester City in 1959.

Hodgson made 11 changes for the game from the weekend's 3-2 reverse at Manchester United but the side still included first-team players like Daniel Agger, David Ngog, Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva.

He now insists he will give the players involved a chance to redeem themselves and will not wield the axe immediately.

The Reds boss said: "I honestly believed with the players we had on the field, players with international and Premier League experience, we would be good enough to win the game.

"They have to do a lot of work to get themselves back into favour and I will learn an awful lot from this defeat about an awful lot of people.

    Early doors
"It is early doors for some of them - some are still quite young and were making their debuts - but I don't want to be drawn into making a bold statement.

"It is September. We have got this group of players until January minimum, maybe even longer.

"I am certainly not prepared to make the statement that I am going to suddenly start wielding axes.

"A lot of players will be bitterly disappointed they didn't take the chance they were given but they'll get other chances I'm sure.

"The players themselves will be looking to take responsibility for their individual performances.

"Those that come to the conclusion 'I could have done a bit more' I am sure will look in the mirror and take responsibility for that.

"But it is one game and there are lots more to play. I would expect these players to learn from their performance, bounce back and, if they are going to be Liverpool players, to kick on from this very low point in everyone's career."

Hodgson must now pick his troops up for the visit of Sunderland on Saturday, with the Reds needing a result after picking up just five points from their opening five top-flight games.

He added: "It is a tough period to live and work through but we will survive it and we will get better.

"Results colour everything. You get a bad result and everyone has played badly, everything was wrong.

"There are going to be lots of other games this season where people will be expecting us to win and we don't and there will be games where people maybe don't expect us to do very well and we do well - that is the nature of football.

"There are negative headlines after the Northampton game but let's hope on Saturday we can come out and give a good performance and put all those headlines behind us."

FFS Roy your not at Fulham now. You are the LFC manager! Could you imagine Shanks or Rafa coming out with this?

That's the nature of football" Is he having a laugh? That's the nature of mid table football! Liverpool FC should not be looking to lose many games and win games unexpectedly. He has absolutely no idea of what's expected of him, hence his negative, low expectation tactics. Wake up Roy!

He does seem to promulgate a small club attitude, but I'm not ready to give up on him yet. If memory serves Fulham had a pretty crap first season with him before things got better.
    Really?

I can't help but feel he's lowered expectations so much we have absolutely no hope of achieving anything remotely meaningful. If you go onto the pitch thinking that way, how many 50/50s do you think you end up winning? Have to say I am very unimpressed with Roy so far.

When are Liverpool managers going to learn.

1.) width, we have none at all! We were killed by Utd at the weekend because of width. We were killed by City because of Width. Look where they are in the league.

2.) Gerrard should only play in the middle from now on.

3.) Torres should have played last night. He needs games and sharpness (so he has said) so he should have played last night. I see ferdinand played for Utd last night for the same reason.

4.) Babel, Nick the Greek and Lucas are deadwood and not good enough for us.

5.) He didn't sign a back up striker for Torres (N'Gog isn't good enough) BUT Javanovic and Kuyt are good enough to do so.

I guess our managers may start to learn when they are given money to make the team better.

On Roys comments. His comments are realistic. They make sense. If any manager said the same things at the start of the season, come the end of the season they would be correct.

Arsenal may ahve gone unbeaten in the league, but no team has ever gone unbeaten through a season. And there are more likely than not suprise results thrown in.

It's not what we want to hear. But it is realistic.

He is desperate to make us the new Fulham. O why o why did they appoint him what a major mistake which sadly we will all live to regret.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Agger also proved last night why we SHOULD have a ball playing centre-half.

If we had to sack him, it would all depend on who was available. I'd love to know who was willing to take the job on.

I think at one point we only really knew for definite two candidates. I did a poll on it, Hodgson v Kenny and it was Kenny by a landslide, who was my pick out the two.

When the possibility of his leaving was first discussed I wanted Jose. When we knew he wasn't interested I went with Hiddink or Van Gaal. I don't know how realistic those two ever were.

If it was to be a British manager and not Kenny I wanted Martin O'Neil. Don't know if he wanted the job or not.

Who I didn't want was Hodgson. But he deserves time now he's here.

                          Jose Segura.

I think he would be a success and he probably know the players better than anyone else at the club that includes the youth team and reserve team players.

He wouldn't need time to adapt. He could take over straight away without any problem at all.

He also won the league and Cup in Greece with Olympiakos so he isn't a rookie and he is the man that built up the Barcelona youth teams.

I've seen you post that before.

I don't think there is anything to suggest he would be a success tbh. If he was cut out for management and the stresses that go with it he would still be a manager. Besides, when we get new owners the current manager will be gone as they get their own man in and we'll be left without a top class coach.
