meireles isnt an alonso type figure - he's much more mobile but his passing isnt anywhere near xabi's.Originally posted by Pablo1981 View PostI hope whoever does replace Roy uses Meireles properly, and puts him at the heart of our midfield. He can do a similar job to Alonso for us if used properly, really get us ticking again.
He's utterly wasted as a wide player!
We will need another midfield player capable of making the play from that position like alonso did. Aquilani has the range but doesnt have the heart. Other than him (and gerrard who should be playing behind fernando) we dont have anyone.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

Paul Dalglish has told talkSPORT his dad still has plenty to offer Liverpool and would be prepared to help the club in any way possible - including a return to the managerial hot-seat.
The former Anfield legend is currently an Academy Ambassador at the Merseyside club but has been linked with a return to the top job unless fortunes improve rapidly under Roy Hodgson.
Liverpool have made their worst start to a season for 57 years and are in turmoil on and off the field. And Dalglish junior would back his famous father to turn things around.
“
My dad’s got the greatest football brain I’ve ever known and the managerial record to back it up
”
Paul Dalglish
He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: "My dad’s said publicly he wanted the job before Roy Hodgson got it. But he was politely told he wasn’t the right person for the job and was perhaps out of touch.
"But Einstein never stopped being a genius, did he? Once you’re a genius you’re always a genius. And my dad’s got the greatest football brain I’ve ever known and the managerial record to back it up.
"He will help Liverpool in whatever way he can. He loves Roy Hodgson to bits and certainly doesn’t want the job while Roy’s there, but my dad’s got too much to offer not to be involved in the game in some way."
These are troubled times for Liverpool fans with further uncertainty over the future of the club, and Dalglish insists no-one is more concerned than his father.
He added: "The problem my dad’s got is people think he has a lot more power than he’s actually got [at Liverpool]. My dad’s only an academy coach but because of what he’s done at the club before people think he’s involved in the running of the club and all these decisions.
"But what's happening is a worry to him. He loves Liverpool more than anyone I know. Once Liverpool’s in your heart it’s very hard to stop caring and he just wants to see a nice future for Liverpool and a solution to the problems we’ve got at the moment."

I'm not sure that we need to have him play in exactly the way Alonso did. A more mobile player could help us play in the right areas and link the defence to more attacking areas of the pitch just as effectively even without the range of passing Alonso had. I think that is what Pablo is meaning. I think there is a logic that says that using that sort of approach is similar to what United have done (when not playing Carrick as a second rate Alonso figure). There are very few players in the world capable of doing what Xabi did in the PL and I think we need to be looking for other solutions.Originally posted by el matador View Postmeireles isnt an alonso type figure - he's much more mobile but his passing isnt anywhere near xabi's.

Exactly. I know he doesn't have his range of passing (who does!). He doesn't need to spray 40 yard cross-field balls all day long to do that, it's about short, sharp, accurate passes. The key point I was trying to make was we need a player who will pick the ball of the CBs and start moves off intelligently, so we keep the ball better and don't give it away needlessly.Originally posted by dww View PostI'm not sure that we need to have him play in exactly the way Alonso did. Alonso used to do this, and we miss it, badly. I think Meireles is capable of doing this role for us, and as mentioned he is more mobile than Alonso ever was too, so that's an added bonus.

It will be equally convincing.Originally posted by Pablo1981 View PostRemember Rafa's "We will finish in the Top 4" promise last year?
Well I predict a similar promise from Roy in the next few weeks. Only it will be:
"We won't be relegated"

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is eager to spend big in January if the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures goes through.Originally posted by Pablo1981 View PostRemember Rafa's "We will finish in the Top 4" promise last year?

The Reds are confident that NESV, fronted by American businessman John Henry will have a £300million bid accepted by the board.
Current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are determined to battle for control at Anfield after refusing to bow down.
Liverpool have made their worst start to a season for 57 years with only a single Premier League victory to date.
The Anfield outfit have taken just six points from their opening seven matches and have sunk into the bottom three.
However, the club are confident that if the deal were to be completed, Hodgson would have money to spend.
The former Fulham manger told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We know what we must do. We need new players and investment.
"These things have been the case since I arrived here and we have not had a chance to put it right.
"I ask for the fans' patience, trust and belief as we will get it right."
Hodgson admits he is ready 'to put things right' in the transfer market and is keen to bring in real quality, admitting the squad are weak in some areas.
"It is clear we need to strengthen in certain areas of the team and bring in more quality," he said.
"I can guarantee that at the end of the season we won't be sitting there at the bottom.
"Sometimes, even after a few games, people see you down there and are ready to pass out, but we're not panicking. There is a lot more to come.
"A couple of good performances and good wins will put us in a decent position for the season ahead."

he is a super player. IMO The only other club i can see Coentrao going to is Real Madrid, Chelsea,Arsenal and United have class left backs. City and Barca are sorted for left backs.
Madrid with the Mourinho connection and the possibility they could do with a LB too, well that would be no contest if it came down to us vs them in our current predicament. But i'd love to see Coentrao here, exactly what we need at LB and not just another stop gap.

What about Zhirkov at Chelsea for LB? He apparently wants to leave. We're no longer challenging them at the moment so they might sell him to us. Much better than what we have at the moment.Originally posted by danperkins View Post
