Gerard Houllier believes Liverpool are starting to show signs of becoming a real force under Roy Hodgson.

The Frenchman brings his Aston Villa side to Anfield tonight searching for what would be only their second victory in 10 league outings.

Ahead of his emotional return, Houllier found time to lend some supportive words to a man whose seat in the dugout he used to occupy.

"I saw Liverpool play against West Ham the other week. They are back," said our former boss.

"I am sure Roy will turn it around at Liverpool. He will do it. No problem. Give him a bit of time. He needs to change a few things. The problem is at Liverpool, when you lose, it's a crisis."

Houllier left Anfield in 2004 after a trophyless season in which the Reds finished fourth.

His tenure saw six pieces of silverware added to the trophy room.

On his legacy, Houllier said: "I always think the mission of a manager is three-fold.

"The first one is to win a trophy and have silverware and win titles and so on - and we did that.

"The second one is to leave a legacy. I would just use my former chairman's words. He said, 'You put the club into the 21st century.' Which it needed, maybe, at the time.

"The legacy is the team because the team that was left with Rafa Benitez won the Champions League the following year.

"We also had new facilities and maybe a new style of professionalism, I would say.

"I think the third mission of a manager is to make your players improve.

"We had a Ballon d'Or with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard is a world-class international player.

"All the players, whether it was Danny Murphy, Emile Heskey, Stephane Henchoz or Sami Hyypia, all did well, contributed and became better players."

I'm just surprised he didn't say we've turned a corner

I reckon the majority of rational LFC fans would agree with the facts that Houllier improved many things, brought the club into the 21st century, put the club back on the European stage, won us some trophies and bought some class players.

He doesn't need to let us know every month.

I wish he'd just stop going on about us and what he did.

Also I wish he'd stop trying to take credit for what other people did after replacing him. France and the World Cup and us in the Champions League.

Houllier has some ego on him, doesn't he? Wish he'd just shut the **** up to be honest.

Watching that match tonight promises to be a cringing experience.
          Are we winning?

TBH, if I was a rival manager I'd be saying Roy will get it right too. Because that's one extra team I could finish above. Any chance teams like Villa have of finishing in the Europa spots is helped by LFC sitting around midtable.

it will be as awful as the last one and every bit as painful as the next one.

I havent been this low for years.

30 ****ing years of watching Liverpool even under the dark days of Souness and Houiller towards the end at least we had a winning mentality ( just **** teams) now we dont even have that.

We are becoming/ have become a mid-table team. Probably do just enough not to get sucked into relegation but not enough to challenge for Europe

              Painful

Based on nothing but a gut feeling I reckon Roy will get the boot if we lose tonight.

                  ...which is a distinct possibility.

If Ged gets Villa up for this, and if they have watched any of our games this season they must surely fancy it - and want to have a go at us.

Apart from when they played scum at home. VIlla have been awful from what i have seen.

Really hope Villa win tonight though if your gut is right.

                      I hope we lose anyway

My gut is more 'ever expanding' than 'right', but lets hope it is on to something.

TBH I think Ged deserves more for what he did at LFC. And I'm no massive fan of the football we played under him.

He does. But he should stop with the constant snipping at Rafa (although not a big fan) and Ged won us the Champions league bull****e 'His team'. He should look at the mess he is creating at Villa if that is the case. A soild Villa team reduced to 1 win in a dozen or so games. Thats not progress.

Also from what I have read Roy and Ged are old chums, so I expect more back slapping and half time reach arounds from Roy.

                                Is it?

Not having a go but I thought it was a team sport that was about coming first. Now I realise with Roy in charge we're not going to get that but for me I don't care how bad we play, how ugly as long as we win.

I don't want to play pretty football and lose all the time, I want to win.

Entertainment is secondary and what Sky talk about for their own gain.
