I think talk of winning the league would take the word 'optimistic' to all new levels, but you mentioned after last nights performance that fourth could be 'there or thereabouts'. There was an obvious disclaimer after that, but there was an air of optimism in your post following a very good performance against a weak time. Much like there was an air of pessimism after we 'only' won 1-0 at their place and we were lucky with that.

I think there was a lot of space behind our advanced full-backs and our back line at times, with the midfield still learning when to cover; a better team (of Premiership standard) would exploit that and I think there will be teething problems as we revert back to zonal marking.

I think we're going to concede a fair few goals this season and it will be a matter of how clinical we are going forward. I'm thinking sixth this season, with a fall away from a challenge for fourth around Easter, with plenty of high-scoring games and some classics thrown in for good measure.

Agger should be embraced, it's not often you get a foriegn world class player that loves the club. Last one was Xabi and we ****ed that up. Plus he's just had he's knuckles done

Yup, you know it's for real when the knuckles get tattooed. Looking forward to seeing torres on the receiving end of those when we next play them.

yes mate im cautiously optimistic but i dont think we will win the league or any of that nonsense. if we get to 65 points this season that will show real progress for me irrespective of league positioning.

70 points will probably secure CL football.

The idea about us conceding more goals is purely down to the fact that we will be taking the game to the lesser 14 or 15 sides in the league and playing more solidly against the top ones. In games against the top six we fared well but its those games against the west broms and swanseas that we lost a lot of points especially at home.

So what if were more open against lower level teams (like we were last night against gomel) at least we're trying to win matches hence the fullbacks pushed up and open space behind.

I'd rather see us win 3-1 than 1-0 but my guess is that part of allens role in the team will be to win possession back much higher up the pitch like masher used to do for us so even when we do lose the ball, we will try and win it back very quickly and stop the opposition mounting their counters.

our pressing and work rate to win the ball back was superb and much better than anything ive seen in the last two seasons.

If we *must* sell to raise funds, I would much rather sell:

                  Downing for £10m (Sunderland, Villa)
                  Adam: £7m
                  Spearing: £3m

There's twenty million quid and none of those prices are unrealistic at all.

If you sell Agger, one of our best players, it significantly weakens not only the squad but the first team - and the squad then needs a damn sight more strengthening (the so-called reason for the sale) than it required in the first place. False economy.
3m for Spearing is unrealistic, we'll get half that at best.

It's not wise to even conceptualize the idea of selling Agger and especially not to replace him if we do end up selling him.

Coates had absolutely no experience at PL level and will need time to adopt to Skrtel as his partner and Carra is way past his peak that it would be a suicide to go into the season with him as first choice CB.

If we sell Agger we better have very good replacement lined up that can step in right away as we are breaking perfect partnership at the back that will take years to establish again.
