Medics still to pin down cause of Steven Gerrard groin problem - Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish

KENNY DALGLISH admits Liverpool still have no idea what is wrong with Steven Gerrard despite the skipper being ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Gerrard underwent a groin operation in March only to suffer a similar complaint during training last Friday as he prepared for a first-team return.
The 30-year-old visited a specialist this week, with Dalglish yesterday confirming the worst as Gerrard joined Daniel Agger in sitting out the rest of the campaign.
But the Liverpool manager has revealed the Anfield outfit have yet to ascertain the full extent of the problem and are unaware whether the England international must once again undergo surely.
“We don’t know (if Gerrard requires an operation),” said Dalglish. “Until we find out from the specialists we cannot say anything definitive and it would be wrong for us to say what the situation is or mislead anybody.
“It is best to wait until we know exactly what the problem is and then we will decide whether it is surgery or not.
“It’s a similar area but it’s not the same injury so we’ll just have to wait and see.”Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

he's been a regular really since he was 21 ish and thats 9 years playing 50 games a year in the centre of the pitch.
it shouldnt be a surprise that his body is giving up and we need to think about a long term replacement. he isnt finished by any means but we need to think ahead because the finest liverpool player of our generation probably only has another 2 seasons at the top level to give.
the other thing about groin injuries is that they are really difficult to completely get rid of. I pulled my groin in a stupid tackle playing sunday league and it still hurts 10 years later.Last edited by el matador; 09-04-11, 09:41 AM.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

That is what I said the whole time. We need to play him less or we won't get the best out of him. As I have said so many times. He isn't superman.
We need to bench him in some games and Gerrard himself will need to understand that we do it to save his career.
Play him as much as we have done and he could be finished at the top after next season. Bench him in some games and he could still be a top class or very good player the next three four years.Stop the cyberhate

from now on I will skip talking about our finances. That is a promise and will save myself from looking like a

the best thing is for us to sell him for £20m to a spanish side like Madrid or somewhere in Italy where the pace is slower and the weather is hotter and its better for the body.Originally posted by Arn View Post

After 10 years in the premier league he could do with a lower intensity of football and italy or spain will provide that.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

I really don't think it would be. At the minute we don't really have any centre to the team/squad and little leadership. To get rid of those players who provide that when fit seems like madness to me. I'm not sure that ~£20m would be enough to allow us to bring in the sort of player who would instantly transform the squad.Originally posted by el matador View Postthe best thing is for us to sell him for £20m to a spanish side like Madrid or somewhere in Italy where the pace is slower and the weather is hotter and its better for the body.

My feeling is that we should however look to be building a team with the idea that Gerrard will not play most games. Hopefully if we do that we can use him more sparingly and prolong his career with us whilst also getting the benefit of having a world class player in the squad. At United the likes of Paul Scholes have played ~20-25 games some seasons but the games have been selected mostly on the basis of team need rather than being predicated by injury. As it is we seem to rush Stevie back and get less from him when he is on the pitch."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

the problem with that is that you just cant leave a player like steven gerrard out of your team. he's the club captain, a former captain of england (i know who isnt these days!) and one of the worlds best players.Originally posted by dww View PostI really don't think it would be. If he's fit he plays. If somehow we do manage to sign some other decent creative players that can replace stevie then resting him for carling cup, fa cup and lesser PL games might mean we get 40 games out of him each season.
I just dont think that gerrard himself will be happy at being left out of the team even if its for his own good.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]
