The price tag is not his choice, but he's been fit barring the last week or so for some time now and been consistently poor.

it doesn't matter that he didn't set his price tag, we paid £35 million for him, so he needs to be a player of that standard to be a good buy... he isn't and in my opinion never will be.

I didn't rate him as a Liverpool player at Newcastle and and have seen nothing from him to change that opinion. When you factor in how much worse we seem to play when he's on the pitch, i don't want him anywhere near our first 11.

    Pretty simple really.

We started poorly, conceded a deflected goal then the penalty decision put daylight between us and Spurs.
We had a few half chances and had the game stayed 1-0 then there was every chance that we would have built up enough pressure to nick a goal.

Yes the performance was disappointing but arguably we didn't get the rub of the green or bounce of the ball.

What today showed was that if our plan A doesn't work for whatever reason then we have no plan B, we didn't have anyone of real game changing quality to bring on from the bench. That's why we need to add 3-4 players to our starting XI

Realistically, I'd be happy if we filled three of the following:

            Defensive central midfielder
            Creative central midfielder
            Attacking wide player
            Left back
            Centre back

We've been linked with some quality players in each of those positions, I just hope we can push deals for some of the better ones through. How much we'll have to spend and who will want to come to us is just a guessing game though.

We were playing a morphed 4-3-3 for most of the time when Meireles was playing 'wide left'. It's important to have players like him.

Play with a Lucas-Spearing midfield and you'll need your front four to be in scintillating form for us to keep winning games and that won't happen all the time.
I'm not convinced we've started playing a 4-3-3 system during the last few weeks but at times we've morphed into that system and then morphed back when it has suited

To me its looked 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 but with the added Kenny twist

Back in the day (87) Kenny played a 4-4-2 system that involved the team switching formations countless times over the course of a game

Houghton would tuck in and Barnes would push forward but still wide left to create a lobsided 4-3-3

Thats what I see happening its a very fluid system Raul is often wide right with Kuyt pushed up top then next minute Kuyt is being played wide right with Raul playing off a front man

Then you have Suarez's movement which is all over the pitch so its difficult to pinpoint exactly what system we are doing

Should it have been more.... memorable?

Well, I've been away for a while and I am still learning the game...

next season will be a different story - new players, full pre-season and we've proved we can beat the bigger sides already - just need consistency which a few players will add and a plan B as you said!

today wasn't great but not the end of the world and certainly not as bad as some have been making out on here.

Slow, ponderous, wants too many touches... i could go on but don't really see the point.

I thought he would be a poor signing on the 31st January and i've yet to see much to change that opinion. £35 million says he needs to hit the ground running, he's done anything but that.

When i think about the caliber of player we could have signed for that money i despair.
Could be worse we could have spent £50 million on the sort of calibre player you are talking about who also hasnt hit the ground running

The lad arrived injured and has probably played less than a half dozen games and already people are writing him off

We all know we need additions and we all know the teams above will also make additions, so why not wait until the summer and trust that Kenny/Camolli will do the right thing.

Fair enough, and not that i'm disagreeing but where would we fit two centre midfielders into the squad? Bearing in mind Meireles was out today, and Gerrard still has to come back?

I defo think we need one top centre mid player though. That's a must.

Them other positions certainly need strengthening, i'm sure everyone would agree.

Carroll needs 3 things to be fully effective, pace at the back, service from wide and runners from midfield.
Pace at the back means we play a higher line meaning the distance from back to front is smaller meaning we don't resort to launching it long aimlessly.
Service from wide is self explanatory as Carroll is excellent in the air.
Midfield runners allow us to play off Carroll, either hitting his feet or playing flat balls into his chest.

Today and most games Carroll has played we haven't had any of those 3

What a load of absolute ****e

Sunderland was pretty much his first start, he then played at West Brom and played well against City before getting injured v Arsenal, hes subsequently missed most of the next 3 games and came back today which I believe is his first start since Arsenal away one month ago

You could argue he was working his way back to fitness hit form against City and then got injured the following game

He comes back for his first start for a month and people are writing him off its ****ing laughable

You are being a tad pedantic (which isnt unusual) the poster has stated he didnt rate him and that hes been consistantly poor when the lad has barely played

He stated the player should have hit the ground running - yep just like Torres

Fact is the lad has been injured and probably has more of an excuse than the even more expensive Torres

Frankly even had he stayed fit I think I'd air on the side of caution lets see what hes capable of after a pre-season
