'That's why we bought Jordan'
29th Oct 2011
Steve Clarke believes the assist claimed by Jordan Henderson for our winning goal at Stoke was an illustration of why the club were so eager to sign him this summer.
Luis Suarez may have hogged the headlines for his sublime brace, but Henderson's pass to create the Uruguay international's second also caught Clarke's eye.
"It's always been the case in football that the goalscorer gets the headlines but sometimes the assist is just as good," said the first-team coach. "For all Luis did the hard work himself for the first goal, it was a fantastic first-time ball in from Jordan for the second goal.
"A pass like that catches the defence unaware. If Jordan takes a touch the defenders have time to adjust and maybe we don't get the goal.
"That's why the club's made the investment in Jordan - he's one for the future but he's one for now as well. He's got great qualities, he loves working at his game, he wants to get better all the time and for a young player that's a fantastic attribute. You saw on Wednesday that he has the quality to turn games.
"He's got great energy on the pitch, he likes to get forward. His contribution is there to be seen."
The Reds travel to West Brom this weekend looking to protect a six-game unbeaten run in competitive action.
Last season Clarke and co came away with a rare defeat against the Baggies, who had just appointed Roy Hodgson as manager.
Clarke on Suarez
Despite an unsuccessful period at Liverpool, Hodgson is a more than capable manager according to Kenny Dalglish's right-hand man.
"He did a good job at Fulham and all his previous clubs before that," said Clarke. "Nobody has to sit and say that Roy Hodgson is a good manager, you know from his experience over the years. Wherever he's been he's done a good job and he's doing the same at West Brom.
"We remember last year we went down there and they beat us 2-1 after we'd taken the lead. It was really disappointing and we know to expect a difficult game.
"They had a difficult start to the season and maybe didn't pick up the points they deserved to pick up in some difficult games. They found it hard to get started but in recent weeks their performances have improved, their results have improved, and we go down there to face a team with confidence.
"But we have confidence and are doing well. We look forward to the challenge."

Alonso and Garcia were bought to win the Champion's League, Henderson was bought to win the Carling Cup.Originally posted by Exiled_red View Post

After watching the WBA game, i still think hendo is a bit wasted on the right, imo his best position would be next to lucas however he did show glimpses of a good partnership with glen johnson, i think that combo will work well on the right because hendo likes to cut inside and this compliments johnson who loves to overlap and then look to cut-in or pass back inside.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

I've thought this from day one about Johnson and Henderson. Downing supply's the width on the left, Hendo cuts into the middle with Glen roaming down the right. Almost a carbon copy of Kenny's previous side, less quality of course.Originally posted by lil_luis_07 View PostAfter watching the WBA game, i still think hendo is a bit wasted on the right, imo his best position would be next to lucas however he did show glimpses of a good partnership with glen johnson, i think that combo will work well on the right because hendo likes to cut inside and this compliments johnson who loves to overlap and then look to cut-in or pass back inside.
Sooner Johnson gets back to full fitness the better. He's nowhere near it right now.

I've been pretty happy with him in most of the games. I like Henderson. He needs time, but he's quite polished, he does the simple things well, which means he can play in any midfield position. I think that the idea of playing him in cameos or starting him on the right is a good idea to get him into a good stage of development before letting him become a staple in the centre. We've seen a lot of other good, young midfield players not being able to really get stuck into and influence a game. Allowing him to grow on the right before letting him fulfil in his "best" position seems a good choice.
I also like the way he finds himself in handy positions. Today Carroll knocked down a ball to him but he scuffed the shot. He popped up in a good place, I think due to this he'll chip in with quite a number of goals and assists.

I thought his performance was much better than WBA and when he played on moments in "his" more natural position as central mid to me he looked very decent.
I don't particularly fancy him at right but I suppose that is the only position Kenny wants to see him atm.
Like his mobility a lot and he is pretty fast but needs to work on few other areas of his game.
His finishing touch needs to improve as he finds himself in good scoring opportunities quite regularly but he cannot put those away.
His heading is poor and his defending especially tackling needs to get better.
Very good potential but he needs to work extra hard to become a complete player.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Always thought he was a good player. Anyone who can pass with one touch and without having to look around is wroth having in your team.
He can develop different attributes like finishing and heading and he'll be a very good player for us after thatPatience when teased often, transforms into rage

I think we should have brought him into the team with these types of cameo appearences rather than throwing him at the deep end straight off.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostComing on a bundle already. Great little cameo today, his performances are getting better all the time with his increasing confidence. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
