I'm not saying Gerrard should be discounted - just that we have to consider a team/formation which we could play when he can't. I think teams like Real Madrid or even for much of last season Barcelona manage fine with an unspectacular fullback. We won't be challenging to win the league and have to make a compromise somewhere in out team building. I really think fullback is an area we can afford to make it.

I wasn't relying on anyone of the three fullbacks I listed - more stating that in those three we have sufficient cover IMO. It's not ideal but I think it would be a mistake to divert funds from other areas in order to buy a left back. I would have no problem if we sorted the rest of the team and then bought a leftback at all. I'd just list it as about 2nd or 3rd on the list of players I think we need (now that Adam has been signed).

At the minute I have LW, LB and CB prioritised in that order. Anything else would be a bonus.

Personally I would prioritise sorting out a CB pairing - that would be my first priority. Then I'd like an attacking creative player who ideally would also offer width - either a winger or wide playmaker.

After that I would like to see a more physically impressive deep lying midfielder. I suspect we won't see this and that Spearing will be backup to Lucas.

Then I'd be happy to have a fullback.

Well I didn't want my hard drawn up stat's going to waste in a closed thread ( nor with the incorrect spelling of foul...thanks Fan65!) so I thought I'd post them in here for further reading / arguing

2nd Highest amount of Yellow cards for a midfielder in the premiership.
2nd Highest amount of fouls conceded.

3rd Highest Goal scorer in the Premier League from midfield 12 ( yes I know he takes pen's and free kicks...)

6th Highest Assist rate from Midfield - 8 Assists

8th For Key Passes (64)

15th for Successful passes (The only Liverpool player higher than him for this was Lucas)

18th for tackles won ( so definitely not a defensive midfielder)

Adam's signing will mean we have 2 of the top 10 players with the highest Key Pass rate in the premiership last season ( the other being Henderson )... Downing ( if he comes) would make it 3....
