Lots of teams who looked at him including Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and the usual Spanish teams.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostWho did? Anyone who'd seen him play knew he was dynamite. You call it "hindsight", I call it evidence. Regardless of your "hindsight", he was a ****ing bargain whether you like it or not. £50m would've been more like it.
At the time nobody could say it looked cheap. Now it does. Why? Hindsight. Always 20 20

I think its well worth remembering that 4 of the players that Spurs had in the side where brought in by Damien Comolli but none of them where world beaters when they first got them. 2 / 3 seasons later and the purchases are coming to fruition for Spurs.Originally posted by Daniel 7 View PostIf he carries on like this, I think he'll be the first to recognise he doesn't have it. there are available options, but how much of last season was the bounce effect?
We've also signed the wrong players. A lot of money on the wrong players.

Why?Originally posted by rcasemore View Postit was a depressing result but the aim is for 4th this season, we're still well within a shout for that I think!
We've had an easy start to the season, no european distraction, and are averaging 1.4 points a game, enough for 54 points. The first decent side we've played and we were mudered (before the sendings off).
All we've done is spent big, unfortunately this was a bit of a plaecebo, as we've spent the money for quality but received mediocrity.
Things are very bad. I don't think were going to see us return to the big time in many many years.

You know, I've just been reading through all the posts and comments, it amazes me the massive over reaction that happens on here any time we get beaten or drop points, what ever happened to the "Intelligent Liverpool supporters" that we used to hear so much about?
I'm also amazed that people think were now headed for mid table, yes we were far off the pace yesterday, but if we had won we'd have been third this morning.

3 of the 6 or 7 toughest away games out of the way and now we cant get 4th? I despair.

Do we have to look so carthorse like in the mean time? Surely we have training sessions? We should loan Carroll back to Newcastle for a season then bring him back.Originally posted by Sebastian Rooks View PostI think its well worth remembering that 4 of the players that Spurs had in the side where brought in by Damien Comolli but none of them where world beaters when they first got them. 2 / 3 seasons later and the purchases are coming to fruition for Spurs.

I'd wager that someone like Berbatov would be useful right now.Was muß, das muß.

I'm not sure what's going on with our team/squad this season, however there are a number of worries, I thought we got the tactics wrong yesterday and made some very silly and frustrating mistakes, the worrying thing is that there are question marks over alot of the players we have signed in the last 9 months or so, perhaps some need more time to settle.
Carroll for me is the biggest dilema, I'm not sure we know what to do with him, for some reason whenever he starts we seem to play badly, I'm not sure if that's because we decide it's an easy option to hoof balls up at him or whether we miss Kuyt (who he usually repaces) or what but it always seems to be the case.
Henderson again I'm not sure we know what to do with, he has had some good performances and some matches where the game seems to completely by pass him. I'm not sure what his best role is, I'm not sure he has the right type of game to play a wide right role, and I've not seen him play centrally.
Adam has some very good and some very bad games, yesterday I thought he was terrible, not just the two bookings but the rest of the game. Far too often Spurs were attacking and he was ahead of the ball rather than behind it closing Spurs down or picking up runners.
Add to that a couple of longer serving players having problems. Skrtel yesterday was completely out of his depth, ok he was playing out of position so he was always going to have some problems but he got caught out time and again by the ball in behind him, to some extent I can have some sympathy with him for than, he got little or no help from the man in front of him. Kuyt should have started there (as many people have said) to help him out. But I find Skrtel's sending off very frustrating, having seen the way the referee was going (and already being on a booking), it was stupid for someone of his experience to make that type of challenge for the 2nd yellow. Carragher again I'm not sure what was going on, what was he playing at for the last goal? He was about 5 yards behind the other defenders, was he knackered and not able to run out or what? The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

We never got started yesterday, it happens. You just know that from the first 5 minutes that its going to be one of those days. One thing that really stood out yesterday was how we continually passed the ball sideways and backwards. We lack any creativity in our midfield and resorted to the 'Carroll' ball far too many times. Reality check me thinks.

Totally agree, Agger's slip to give away possession for the wonder goal confirmed worst fears. We started slowly and everything that could have gone wrong did.Originally posted by GTi View PostWe never got started yesterday, it happens. We will get better, this is the first game we have played poorly.
However...what bothers me is that for £55 million we bought Henderson and Carrol. For the same money spurs have; Modric, Bale, Van der vart, Adebayor, Parker.
They would all walk into our side. When are we going to start making astute, good value signings like those?

I know this sounds harsh, and the lad tried to put in a good shift, but whenever I see Carroll's name on the teamsheet I worry. We just don't seem to have the fluency in the team when he is in it and I would prefer to go back to the axis we had at the end of last season that served us so well with 2 strong tacklers in the middle of the park and a more intelligent striker supported by 3 more creative players.
I don't want this to turn into a post assassinating Carroll, but I honestly don't know what he brings to the team. I know what he should bring to the team - but he just doesn't seem to be able to do it. His first touch is poor, but when he does lay the ball off successfully, he often just runs over right next to a centre half to easily mark him and all too often beat him in the air. If he is not being easily marked - and more alarmingly perhaps - whilst Downing is capable of whipping in some great balls, the problem is Carroll is often stood next to him when he does so.
But the really worrying thing for me was Kenny's inability to change things. I know we had some sendings off, but at one point we had Carroll playing RW - with Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy on the bench. As I said Carroll put in a good shift but he was always fighting a losing battle as he has no pace or movement. How can he be expected to go up against Bale? Any one of Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy would have been a better bet. For me, as soon as we went down to 10 men, we needed pace and so Bellamy should have been brought on to play RW in a 4-2-3 formation. That way we would have had a coherent threat, breaking from deep, with the pace of Downing, Suarez and Bellamy. Arguably Spearing should have also replaced Henderson as he is stronger in the tackle and would have been a decent partner for Lucas, shackling Parker and Modric.
I still think Kenny is the man to take us to the promised land, but yesterday he got it totally wrong throughout the match. I am sure it will be a one off though and we will be in the CL places come the end of the season.
