        It's in your head.

And I thought your "...to you" comment was patronising.

        So I guess we're equal.

        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

But then I haven't suggested racist connotations to the words used by a poster, failed to explain them and expected others to believe them on the basis that I said so. So not really.

That really is very patronising especially given you've provided nothing to suggest your line of thinking is somehow more accurate than my own.

Sorry, at what point did you educate me on the historical baggage of this phrase?

I'd also like to point out that the only way in which I have continued to use the phrase was in the context of this discussion.

Your contribution added nothing as it didn't need saying. I was speaking for myself.

I also don't need to justify my comments to you or to anyone. I specifically wasn't accusing anyone of using a phrase with racist connotations (yes, 'to me' ) in order to push a racist agenda.

I suppose you'd rather I hadn't said anything and just associate anyone who accuses Evra of it with the BNP.

I'm not suggesting my view is more or less accurate, I'm saying it's different.

See my previous post and let me know if that's what you'd prefer.

I'm keeping this brief as I have to go out now - please don't think I'm being deliberately curt.

"By all means express scepticism but saying someone is "playing the race card" brings along with it a history of denial about racism."

Ok, maybe it was just missing an imo.

                  We all move on.

The word Picnic was rumoured to have racist connotations but this has since been disproved.

Just because you may not have an appreciation of the associations of a word or phrase though it doesn't mean it's neutral and I don't think there's any harm in taking account of sensitivities once you become aware. It simply means people aren't going to mistake your position on the issue by not confusing your views with those you yourself would find repellent.

I don't think a false allegation 'makes light' of anything but I'd agree it's clearly wrong and does not help the fight against racism. Whether a recipient of racial prejudice would feel more or less offended by it than something else, I don't know. But it's not either/or - it's easy to avoid using the phrase while communicating what you want to say.

you seemed less inclined to take account to malcg's sensabilites about the british army in afganistan
