Yup, he was one of the major people talking about it and he was absolutely insistent that (A) he was interested (B) it was completely realistic (C) we were in for him first.

We backed off and went for Downing, Chelsea swooped in and got him almost unrivalled. Arsenal wanted him but never actually bid because they were trying to sell first to raise the money.

"His people" invited interest from everyone - Chelsea weren't in the first group that discussed bids for him. They came in right at the end.

There's no reason to believe Gotze can/could cut it in the EPL, just look at Sahin's woes at the moment.

It might look unbelieveable to some that they wanted Henderson as a priority but he has everything in his game to be a top class central midfielder. Perhaps they thought Gotze was too big a gamble to take.
