With our squad, I think the most suited XI to the AVB 433 are:

Gk: Reina
Rb: Johnson
Cb: Skrtel
Cb: Agger
Lb: Enrique
Rcm: Henderson
Cm: Lucas
Lcm: Gerrard
Rw: Suarez
St: Carroll
Lw: Downing

At Porto he played a high line with Cb's capable of joining the midfield. Agger & Skrtel pick themselves, but they are a good partnership and capable enough on the ball. His Fb's tended to defend more than attack, but were pacy enough to get forward. Johnson & Enrique suit that well enough.

The Midfield 3 didn't contribute many goals, but had good engines and in Moutinho they had a bit of creativity. Gerrard for me can play the creative role, Lucas is ideal to hold the centre and Hendo's high work rate and good engine means he is well suited to hold the right side and provide cover when the attacking Rw comes inside.

The front three contributed most the goals. At Lw, Downing takes the Valera role. He offers pace and will hug the touchline. Valera contributed 7 goals for Porto, if Downing settles he's capable of a similar amount. Suarez plays the Hulk role. Starts on the Rw, but comes inside to link with the St and contribute a good amount of goals.

Carroll takes the Falcao role. A big man who will hold the ball up and bring others into play. Has to find the net on a regular basis though.

So there you have it. A decent line up IMO. As many others on here I would worry that certain members of that starting XI would not quite hit the heights. But if we brought in some good players then they wouldn't be bad back ups to have.

As for those we'd no longer require. Maxi is a good player but doesn't suit any of the roles. Kuyt plays Rw for Holland, so could be considered as worth keeping. Adam doesn't have the pace and energy to fit the formation. Carra would be like a fish out of water.

As for the loanees, Aquilani could provide cover as the creative element in the middle 3, but Cole I think would get the chop, though AVB & Clarke did work with him at Chelsea so may see a role for him.

What would we need? A pacy Lw who could replace/challenge Downing unless Sterling impressed enough. I think we'd also need a St who could replace/challenge Carroll. And finally a Cm who could hold the team together in the absence of Lucas.

If we're skint I guess Hoilett could suit as the Lw, Luuk De Jong as the St and Diame as the Cm. if we have more money, then obviously I could suggest some better alternatives. Hazard at Lw, Falcao/Cavani at St and Koovermans of PSV at Cm.
