Thats the problem,if we get Martinez and we don't hit the ground running he will be under huge pressure, unlike any he has known. LFC is no ordinary club and I don't feel taking a chance on a relatively unproven manager is the right road to go down. People jest how we are the new Villa etc but we are still one of the biggest clubs in world football and FSG really need to realise this asap if they are thinking of someone like Martinez.-----------------------------------------------

Dave Whelan warns Roberto Martínez over Liverpool job
Tony Barrett
Published 1 minute ago
John W Henry and Tom Werner will travel to Merseyside next week as they look to conclude Liverpool’s search for a manager after holding talks with Roberto Martínez about succeeding Kenny Dalglish.
As reported this week, the Wigan Athletic manager has interrupted a family holiday in Barbados and travelled to Miami yesterday to meet Liverpool’s owners. He did so in the knowledge that Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, has given Liverpool a deadline of June 5 to hire the Spaniard or else accept that he will not be allowed to leave his present club.
As he continues his attempts to keep his manager, Whelan also warned Martínez that the new football set-up that Liverpool are establishing will afford him less autonomy than he is used to at the DW Stadium.
“I got a phone call this morning and Roberto was on his way to America, he was flying to Miami to meet with Liverpool,” Whelan said. “I didn’t ask him what he has decided to do, but I told him I wanted it sorted out sooner rather than later. If it’s yes to Liverpool, I will accept it and got on with life. But if it’s no I’ll be delighted. My information is that the new Liverpool manager will not be given full responsibility of the football department.
“There will be somebody else signing players, and they might not necessarily be the choice of the manager.
“My advice to Roberto is to think very carefully about this, but Liverpool are a big club and I hope that they remain one of the big clubs. But from what I am hearing the new Liverpool set-up on the football side goes well beyond the norm even with a director of football.”
Martínez is due back in the United Kingdom on Tuesday and Whelan believes that seven days after his return is ample time for Liverpool to make a decision. “Roberto will be in Barbados until next Tuesday, and I will then set a seven-day deadline by which time I will expect a decision,” Whelan said. “Until he gets back it’s all quiet on the western front.
“I appreciate everyone is in limbo at the moment and there will come a time when we’ll need an answer. It is dragging on a bit but I only care about one thing — that is the future of Wigan Athletic. Nothing else matters. It’s important we sort this out properly, so we can move forward in preparation for the new season. I must stress to our supporters that I am by no means resigned to losing Roberto to Liverpool or any other club.
“He may go, he may not go. That will be up to Roberto and I will respect his decision. But it is not a foregone conclusion. Hand on heart, I still believe Roberto will be here next season.”
By setting the ultimatum, Whelan has ratcheted up the pressure on Werner and Henry in advance of their expected arrival in England at the start of next week. The duo are hoping to be able to confirm a number of key appointments with the roles of sporting director and technical director among the positions that are due to be filled.
Liverpool’s American owners would also like to speak to Brendan Rodgers about the possibility of the Swansea City manager succeeding Dalglish.
Unlike Wigan, who immediately granted Liverpool permission to discuss the manager’s job with Martínez as soon as they made an official approach, Swansea declined because Rodgers had shown a reluctance to become involved in a beauty parade.
Werner and Henry remain hopeful that the former Chelsea coach could yet have a change of heart, however, as they look to set up a series of interviews that will determine the identity of their new manager. Louis van Gaal remains the leading contender to become Liverpool’s first sporting director but the 60-year-old is also keen to be considered for the manager’s job.

But it is complete bull**** to suggest that appointing Martinez results in us being a mediocre club like Villa. Firstly, you're assuming he'd do badly, which isn't a given, we have a better squad then teams like Villa, and i expect we'll spend Significantly more on players than them also.Originally posted by kop-al-74 View PostThats the problem,if we get Martinez and we don't hit the ground running he will be under huge pressure, unlike any he has known.
