Hillsborough campaigner Phil Scraton refuses OBE
1 hour ago
Hillsborough campaigner Prof Phil Scraton has turned down an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list.
The author, who led the Hillsborough Independent Panel's research team, said he could not receive an honour in protest "at those who remained unresponsive" to help families and survivors affected by the disaster.
Ninety-six people died following a crush at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.
In April, an inquest jury concluded the fans were unlawfully killed.

Prof Scraton's book, Hillsborough: The Truth, is widely accepted as the definitive account of the disaster.
In a statement, he said: "I researched Hillsborough from 1989, publishing reports, articles and the first edition of Hillsborough: The Truth in 1990.
"Until 2009, and despite compelling evidence, successive governments declined to pursue a thorough, independent review of the context, consequences and aftermath of the disaster.
"This changed as a direct result of the families' and survivors' brave, persistent campaign.
"It led to the Hillsborough Independent Panel, its ground-breaking findings, new inquests and their crucially significant verdicts."
Prof Scraton has previously received the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, the Political Studies Association's Campaigner of the Year Award and an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of Liverpool "with gratitude and humility".
But he added: "I headed the Panel's research team and was a consultant to the families' lawyers throughout the new inquests.
"I could not receive an honour on the recommendation of those who remained unresponsive to the determined efforts of bereaved families and survivors to secure truth and justice."
Hillsborough campaigners Margaret Aspinall and Trevor Hicks, who both lost children in the disaster at the home ground of Sheffield Wednesday, were made CBEs in 2014.
Prof Scraton acknowledged his decision "might come as a disappointment to some Hillsborough families, survivors and whoever nominated me".
However, he added: "Finally, I could not accept an honour tied in name to the 'British Empire'.
"In my scholarship and teaching I remain a strong critic of the historical, cultural and political contexts of imperialism and their international legacy."
Fresh inquests in April concluded that the 96 football fans who died as a result of a crush at Hillsborough were unlawfully killed,
The jury found that match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care.
Police errors also added to a dangerous situation at the FA Cup semi-final.
After a 27-year campaign by victims' families, the behaviour of Liverpool fans was exonerated.
The jury found they did not contribute to the danger unfolding at the turnstiles at the Leppings Lane end of Sheffield Wednesday's ground.

Some ****ing nerve for him to release a book with that title. In fact some nerve to be releasing any sort of book that claims to be telling the "truth" about what happened.

Biteback Publishing is jointly owned by Iain Dale, a Tory, and Lord Ashcroft, another raging Tory. They've published loads of books by Tories. Interesting to see the Tory establishment still closing ranks.

Former South Yorkshire Police chief inspector Sir Norman Bettison has announced the publication of a book about the Hillsborough disaster, saying he has been "unfairly scapegoated".
Sir Norman witnessed the 1989 disaster as a spectator.
At the Hillsborough inquests, he denied being part of a "black propaganda unit" set up to blame Liverpool fans and "concoct" a false version of events.
His book, entitled Hillsborough Untold, will be released in November.
Biteback Publishing said the proceeds would be donated to charity.

Speculating but, I guess given the nature of the incident and then the cover up it probably seemed a bit crass (rightly or wrongly) to be offering any accolades, no matter how well deserved. Now that the truth is out and there is a degree of closure for the families perhaps it is seen as being an appropriate time?Originally posted by Lecter View PostI thought Kenny had already been given the Freedom of the City years ago
Seems strange that we havent done this already

Kenny Dalglish to receive Freedom of City of Liverpool for support of Hillsborough families.
Hillsborough victims to posthumously receive freedom of Liverpool.
Families of the 96 will collect the awards at a ceremony in the city, with Kenny Dalglish among those also receiving the honour.
The 96 Hillsborough victims will be honoured with the freedom of the city of Liverpool in a ceremony on Thursday evening.
The posthumous awards will be collected by families of the Liverpool fans who died in the disaster on 15 April 1989.
Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager on the day of the tragedy, and his wife, Marina, will also be awarded the freedom of the city in the ceremony at St George’s Hall in Liverpool.
Prof Phil Scraton, the primary author of the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s report into the disaster, and the Right Reverend James Jones, former Bishop of Liverpool who chaired the Hillsborough Independent Panel, will receive the same honour.

Answers to the points you raise.Originally posted by BigChief View PostWhat a crap article..."one Liverpool man bought it for his horses". Yeah like that really happened.
And someone from outside Liverpool comes into Liverpool and is stunned they don't sell the S*n. Fecking hell its like walking into Saudi Arabia and being shocked alcohol is not on the shelves. How thick do you have to be not to know the reasons?
Para 1. Gee-gees. Horse racing. Betting.
Para 2. As thick as you?

How did you find out about the boycott? Did someone tell you, did you read about it, or did the knowledge just appear in your head?Originally posted by BigChief View PostWhat a crap article..."one Liverpool man bought it for his horses". Yeah like that really happened.

For those not from the area, unless you have an interest in football or current affairs I can see why loads people wouldn't have any reason to know about it.

A campaign calling on retailers in Liverpool to stop selling The Sun has received the unanimous backing of city councillors.
The newspaper has been widely boycotted in the city due to its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, which led to the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans.
A motion put forward at Liverpool Town Hall on Wednesday night condemned the paper for printing "blatant lies".
The Society of Editors said the motion was "stretching towards censorship".
'Banana republics'
Put forward by Labour councillor Mary Rasmussen, it said: "Due to crowd control mismanagement those fans, whose ages ranged from 10 to 67 years old, had the life crushed out of them,
"Contrary to the facts, The S*n published a front page story with the banner headline
'The Truth' which contained blatant lies.
"For this reason we call on all retailers and vendors of newspapers in Liverpool to stop selling The S*n," said the motion, which recognised the efforts of the campaign group
Total Eclipse of the S*n to "rid" the city of the newspaper.
Relatives of Hillsborough victims attended the full council meeting, where mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said the newspaper would "never, ever be forgiven", and if he could legally do so he "would ban it from shops across the city".
However, Bob Satchwell, from the Society of Editors, which represents about 400 media outlets, said: "In a free society people must be free to choose which newspapers they read or sell.
"The comments from Joe Anderson demonstrate the danger when he says that if he has his way he would ban the Sun. That is what happens in dictatorships and banana republics."
Everton-based newsagent Ronald Butterfield also said it was "wrong for the council to get involved".
"I don't sell it but it is up to people to decide."
He added: "When I tell people who aren't from Liverpool I don't sell it they look at me like I've got knickers on my head.
"One Liverpool man who always bought it for the horses not the news cancelled it because he was worried about the paperboy being seen delivering it."
Explaining why a council-backed campaign was necessary in a city where The Sun is widely boycotted, Emily Heywood of the Total Eclipse of the S*n group said that with new newsagents and changing owners some retailers "had started selling it again and it wasn't being questioned".
All 96 fans who died as a result of a crush at Hillsborough were unlawfully killed, their inquests concluded in April.
