Daniel Sturridge 'wants to play' insists former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers
Striker Daniel Sturridge has "world-class" qualities which can still make a difference to the Liverpool attack, according to former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
The England international is currently battling his way back to full fitness following a hamstring strain, another injury to blight a consistent run in the team.
Sturridge was an integral part of Rodgers' Liverpool frontline alongside Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho which came within three points of delivering the Premier League title in 2013/2014.
Rodgers, who left Anfield in October 2015, to be replaced by German coach Jurgen Klopp, sees no reason why when fully match fit that the 26-year-old forward cannot have another major impact in the team.
"Daniel is a great fella and he wants to play, but it is just difficult for him to get a run of training," Rodgers said in an interview with talkSPORT.
"You have to train, you can't just play in the games, and if Daniel can get that run of training in a week to 10 days of real hard work, then you can put him into the games knowing he is not going to break and then you have got a big, big talent.
"What is so frustrating as a manager is that he is a genuine world-class player. Nine out of 10 players, in that situation you maybe would sell, but because of his talent [Liverpool haven't].
"For the first couple of years at Liverpool, that quartet of him, Luis [Suarez], Raheem [Sterling] and [Philippe] Coutinho were incredible. They were unplayable.
"Daniel is a player that makes a difference. When you have that type of player you want to do everything you can for him.
"He makes the team better. He makes everyone else better. He is a wonderful boy. If he is fit, then he is massive for England as well because he has got everything."What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins

Isn't this basically just what Klopp said?Originally posted by Yozza View PostDaniel Sturridge 'wants to play' insists former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers

When asked if Klopp was pushing the team too hard, Rodgers went off on a 10 minute monologue about how good a manager he himself is and how much coaching and effort he puts into every single player and training session... he didn't actually answer the question.Originally posted by Yozza View PostDaniel Sturridge 'wants to play' insists former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers

Reading between his own lines though - he's truly amazing, should be held in awe and Barcelona or Real Madrid should be targeting him in the summer...
It would be between him and Allardyce, clearly. Close one to call.

the analogy i put with brendan is the father ted episode when he damaged the car. Ted kept tap-tap-tapping the dent out and ended up wrecking the feckin thing.
Rodgers had found the perfect system that suited the players. In reality he found the way to fit in Sterling Sturridge Suarez and Coutinho but the diamond formation actually suited the full backs as well. It actually suited Henderson really well. It suited Joe Allen well when he played. And although Gerrard got the DM role, it actually suited Lucas perfectly.
Brendan's own opinion of himself led him to thinking he could re-invent the way we played, tweak things and "evolve" the team..........he was ****in mad for buzz words like that.... His "the welsh xavi" comment about Joe Allen is famous but I think Brendan thought that he himself was "the northern irish Guardiola". Anyone who has such a big photo of themselves in his house obviously ****in loves himself.
If you look at his 3 and a bit years in the job as a whole though, that is what is most frustrating. So Brendan likes to imply that he bought Sturridge and Coutinho for peanuts, he developed Suarez from a dutch league bully to the best striker on the planet, that he brought a young lad from the youth team and made him into a £50m player, that he saved Hendersons career from fulham. The list goes on. But the real facts are that he spend/wasted a big wad of cash and he didn't win a trophy.
For me though, if we had genuine "football" people in charge, then they would have had him sacked in the summer. Not because we ****ed up the end of last season (although that would have been reason enough) but because when he suggested that Benteke was a good signing, someone should have had the knowledge to say "okay Brendan but the first thing you did when you came to LFC was get rid of Andy Carroll because he didnt fit into the way you wanted to play.....now explain how Benteke is so different" and then whip out the powerpoint presentation that Brendan did 3 years previously and it would have been obvious that he had lost the plot.

The summer was too soon for Klopp, he's said as much. We wouldn't have ended up getting the best people available, Ancelotti was apparently sounded out, but didn't want it. What were they supposed to do?
Looking back, it might be FSG did the right thing in letting Brendan have the start of the season - we eventually upgraded the manager, and Klopp has a full season to assess where he is for the summer recruitment process. We're already seeing player links (Teixeira, Matip) that will probably improve the squad, and that's only after a couple of months. He's also getting first hand, competitive analysis of the players he has in the squad - his assessments are real time. If they had rushed someone in through the door in May, it might have been the wrong person and they would still have been signing the same players, given that negotiations clearly aren't done in a couple of weeks when you're LFC.
So this season is a write off, but we're in the League Cup Final, still in Europe, still in the FA Cup and still theoretically have a chance of the Champions League, all whilst Jurgen gets the longest pre season ever to prepare for a new season.
That hasn't worked out too badly, has it? Back in May, Gary Monk was still being talked about ffs.

Daniel Sturridge: Liverpool striker's injury record since 2013
As Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge nears his latest return to fitness, it is hard to escape the feeling that we have been here before.
The England forward, 26, moved to Anfield three years ago but has been unavailable for 54.8% of his time at the club - that's 614 days missed out of 1,121 spent on Merseyside.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said after taking over that Sturridge needs to "learn what is serious pain and what is only pain".
So just how bad is his injury record? Here, with the help of experts PhysioRoom, we take a detailed look at his fitness problems since signing for Liverpool in January 2013:
