It was more than that, he in all honesty had cost us dearly for a few seasons and had stopped making saves. The saves we've seen from Mig this season I really don't believe that Reina would have made in the vast majority

The problem with Mingolet is not just that his confidence is shot. He's completely lacking in fundamental aspects of the game that's going to be hard to develop at this point of his career. A goalkeeper who can't come off his line and catch a cross with any comfort is always going to be a problem, especially in this league.
He's a great shot stopper (when he's confident), he's bad at everything else. Reina was good at everything else but being a shot stopper. Neither is good enough based on what I've seen so far. Casillas was initally poor at crosses early in his career but he was much younger then.

Still our player after all! There's no way Reina will be coming back.Originally posted by Leyton388 View PostReina wont be back. Getting rid of him was nothing more than a cost cutting exercise.
I think the problem with Mignolet is the lack of a settled back four, his form has dropped off while we've been having all this chopping and changing in front of him. I think that when we have a settled back 4 his form will improve. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

People are re-writing history with him. In hislast couple seasons his shot stopping was almost non existent

Mignolet has admittedly been poor over the last moth or so but before that he had been very good for us and had bailed us out on several occasions making saves that Reina would never have done. Certain posters have been only too eager to forget about Mignolet's previous good form and instead focus on his recent mistakes, agenda driven a lot of it is I would guess.
Remember also that our back 4 recently has consisted of a washed up Toure, the joke that is Martin Skrtel, a couldn't give a **** Glen Johnson and the hopeless Cissokho, oh and having Gerrard in the holding role hasn't helped either, so I'm not surprised our keeper is struggling.
Once Sakho, Enrique and hopefully Agger come back into the side we'll concede less and I expect Mignolet to get back on track.

Having a ****e defence in front of you means you'll be facing more shots and will probably concede more goals. That defence however doesn't result in you ****ing up your dive for the City goal,or getting a poor hand on the Chelsea goal or letting a weak Walters shot that's right beside squirm in or come off your line and completely miss a cross for the Villa goal.
They are all his mistakes,he was in credit because of early season form but he won't be for much longer if he keeps doing this sort of stuff. We have threads on players to discuss their performance. His is another who's performance has been suspect lately and it's getting discussed much like it was when he was playing great. His is the one position where you can ill afford mistakes.
It's too early to make a definitive judgement on him much like it was too early when he was brilliant,he has time on his side and hopefully he'll be what we need going forward.
I'd have picked Begovic though.

Yeah I'm not worried about his distribution, stuff like that is a bonus for a keeper but it does appear strange that the way we play requires someone good with their feet and we signed someone who's not that comfortable with his feet.Makes you think it wasn't a major consideration when they chose their new keeper.Begovic is a better keeper than Mig IMO but he's also older and would have cost more which is maybe part of the reason we went for Mig.

Reina was good second half of last season ,had a poor first half though. So far this season its the opposite with Mig. Reina over Mig or vice versa is not the issue anyway,we were never going to keep Reina cos of his wages so who we bought was critical. Jury will remain out on that one for this season anyway until we can sort out the defence in the summer having hopefully secured 4th but the cheap goals we are losing is making it difficult-not just Mig's fault but he's contributing.
