Not really. Sunderland fans thought his weaknesses there were the same as we do here but as shot stopping was more fundamental than distribution from the back it wasn't an issue. The priority was for him to keep them out not, as it is with us, what he then did with the ball after he had.

As for commanding his area, again, the ones I've spoken to said its never been a strength. The issue is that for whatever reason we've not been able to eradicate his weaknesses. But sometimes even the best coaches in the world can't do that.

Totally agree on the scouting front. Maybe we thought we could develop that part but the lad just doesn't have it in his makeup. but ifwe wanted to play a progressive game, starting at the back, then whoever thought Mignolet was the man for the job wants shot. If, like sunderland, you've constantly got shots raining down on you then he'd be ace. But I'm not sure his shot stopping has declined. He's still decent in that respect and other areas of his game that are weak remain as weak as ever. Don't agree we've made him worse but we've definitely placed the spotlight on his deficiencies for the world
