We need to play ilori and gomez in a lesser game and if they do well we then need to consider if they would be any worst than skrtel and lovren.

Because it isn't. Poor team selection yes but poor squad management no. What's he supposed to do, rotate the centre half's? Even if he got more minutes in pre season, that was a month ago so he'd still be rusty now. We'll see his squad management when we start playing two games a week.Originally posted by captainfog View PostIt is poor squad management. I don't really see how you can argue to the contrary.
If we expect Lovren to be taken out of the team after a mistake then shouldn't the same apply to the rest of them? I'm a big Sakho fan but I think defenders and goalkeepers need some level of certainty regarding their selection in the team to play to their best level. I could see why Rodgers won't drop Lovren and will give him some leeway, if he continues to be bad then you make the change. It can't be done off the back of one game, especially when the 3 before it were of decent quality. Sakho is clearly not favoured for whatever reason so he just has to bide his time cos his chance will come when Dejan carries on being Dejan.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostSo if he makes a mistake he'll likely be taken straight out of the team again, which makes it difficult for him.

In a way Brendan staked his job by trusting Lovren to be the main CB, he could pay for it. Another thing is that I feel we need more left footed players in the team.

Jon Ronson's latest book is well worth a read. All about the idea of Twitter and social media in general becoming the new age judge and jury.Originally posted by McDermotX View Posthttp://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footba...-dejan-6350355

Fact of the matter is Lovren last season was a calamity. And of the pre season games I saw, Sakho looked a safer bet, though neither were tested to a great degree. Behind closed doors I can only determine that Lovren performed better in training.
But Lovren on Saturday simply performed as he did on a regular basis last season. I got my hopes up in previous games as we had three clean sheets and they can not be argued with. But to me Dejan simply hasn't learned. He needs to be removed from the team and replaced with Sakho.
Let Dejan learn and get the message about not to try and overplay in the Europa and League cup alongside an old head in Kolo. Another issue is his lack of pace when we push up. As we get stretched he gets dragged wide and I'm never confident when he gets faced up by an opposition player.Forwards.......

He obviously has more in his locker than he's showing on the pitch otherwise he'd have been in an alternative career but in his time with us he seems unable to track runners, unable to make simple decisions, doesn't demonstrate any positional acumen, seems all over at set pieces, can't deal with one on one situations and that's probably the top of the iceberg. Unfortunately his partner in crime is the same but has a blockbuster saving tackle in his arsenal that occasionally gets him out of whatever problem he's gotten himself into.
Can't think of any other time in our recent history where both centrebacks have been so woeful.A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

The thing is, no goals would happen if people didn't make mistakes. It's just the ones that can be easily avoided that are so bizarre. Carra & Hyypia are the modern day benchmark. Defenders should look at them and mirror what they did.
Now if we have a defender who can do a stopover or Cruyff turn then fine. Let them do it. I wouldn't beat a skill out of them. But as a player you have to know your limits. IFor Dejan gets dragged wide he should know he's in trouble. As such, he should clear his lines when he gets a chance and allow Gomez and others a chance to funnel back so he can go back centrally.Forwards.......

Gomez wasn't even a regular at Charlton at CB. He's done very well for a kid playing out of position, that said he's had moment where he should have done better - West Hams first goal for one.Originally posted by fidget View PostI'd play Gomez and Sakho in the league and let the chuckle brothers play the cup gamesForwards.......

There is a time an place for that sort of stuff, I wouldn't be particularly happy to see a defender doing stuff like that on the edge of their own box as the last man. In the opposition half with cover behind you fair enough. But there is also a time and place for the safe option and putting the ball out of play.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostThe thing is, no goals would happen if people didn't make mistakes. Most of the mistakes our CBs tend to make tend to be when they get dragged wide, that is the time to just boot the ball into the stand, I know we want to play the ball out from the back but no-one complains if you take the the safety first option in those circumstances, it's defending 101.
IMO most mistakes come from trying to be too clever, and would be solved by doing the simple things. I think this sentiment applies particularly to Skrtel and LovrenLast edited by Exiled_red; 31-08-15, 02:19 PM.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I disagree, If he'd played more in preseason then you'd have cover for Lovren that was ready to go. If he comes in against United then it puts unnecessary extra pressure on him.Originally posted by G View PostBecause it isn't. Poor team selection yes but poor squad management no.
